Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland desperately needs new volunteers.
Courtesy photoA group of Hampton Inn Glen Burnie employees that volunteer for Meals on Wheels twice a month. After losing 300 of their 2,000 volunteers over the past fiscal year, officials said they are now turning to local companies to keep the program running. Toni Gianforti, the group's manager of marketing and communications, said the bleak economy has had a stifling effect on their efforts. "We speculate that the escalating cost of gas over the spring and the summer led to a few people leaving, and people who were retired or were planning on retirement may be going back to the work place," she said.
