Yesterday, officers arrested Dametres Maurekoe Short, 18, of Newtowne Drive without incident at his home. Police are still looking for Rishard Richard Naylor, 17, of Log Inn Road in Arnold.
Police said the two men were involved in the shooting of Maurice L. Brown at about 1 p.m. Nov. 16. About 12 hours earlier, four men were shot and two of them were killed, and police records said Mr. Naylor told Mr. Brown...

Making the city worse? - 2008-12-02 18:03:41
J. Brown, I think you give Mr. Williams too much credit in that his views, espoused here in the Capital Gazette comment section, somehow make the city of Annapolis "worst". Now, had you argued that, firearms, in the hands of the thugs mentioned in this article I would agree with you, but I haven't heard anything that even remotely sounds like that from you.

Who controls - 2008-12-01 13:54:09
Lets all think back...when did every thing and every one get out of hand? Would anyone agree that the more power the government has the less power the family has? I have kids, and have been a kid in trouble earlier in my life, I stole 50 cents for lunch, and got caught, my mother beat my behind to the point I COULD NOT sit down, didn't do that again. I came home under the influence when I was 15, and when I woke up, every thing I owned was on the front lawn. It was hell to survive. I learned valuable lessons. Parents don't have that kind of control any more. If I did that to my kid, I would end up in jail. Now a days, all the parents, being the public, is forced to depend on the government or they will be jailed. How very sad. God forbid you correct your child, someone will report you. Parents, based on those facts, let kids get away with everything, while the government says "reason with them". That is never going to work. The public is now in the second generation of these governmental rulings, and look how much we have all suffered.

Hey D.W.,What are your thoughts on how to save "your (I pay taxes)" money in a situation where the courts offer little or no options to prevent recidivism? If a rehabilitation facility is too costly, how about just starving them in prison? Too gruesome? I posit a 14 to 28 day "spin dry" rehab is no solution either. Maybe actual spiritual guidance? Hmm...

Let me clarify everything I have said... I do not care about these people and do not wish to help anyone. I am happy when criminals kill each other because it means they are not housed in jails and clog up the court system. I do not wish people ill will however I do not want to be responsible for them in any way, shape or form. Anyone can call me what they like but these are my honest feelings. Happy Holidays!!!

We live in a democratic society, do we not? That's right - stick your head in the sand and hope it'll go away as long as it does not affect you. Guess what? It is affecting you or you would not be commenting on this article. This is turning into a political discussion and that's never a good thing. I am not going to try to educate the leagues of citizens who profess to "know better". Have you ever been on the "other side" or tried to help those that are? If not, you may want to open your mind just a tad. And as for the comments that they're "just waiting for the government to step in" and "treatment centers are under-utilized"....cite the facts. The "government" needs to step in when we have sick people needing help and they can't get it....if all of them were being treated when it was needed many of these problems would be non-issues. And unfortunately, help has to be free or close to it when the disease of addiction has robbed these individuals of all they have. That is the nature of it. And if it is successful, then you have one more productive, law-abiding citizen.

The solution is simple, stay out of my wallet and stop making excuses. As I said before I don't owe anyone a living and neither does the government. Why does help have to be free???? If people aren't held to a higher standard they will continue to fail.

I was simply responding to Mr. Williams claim that he's doing his part because he pays taxes. You can voice any opinion you want and so can I. I was simply pointing out that being part of the "solution" often times is not enough. I thought the solution for these individuals was made out to be an easy one, when clearly it is not because of our lack of resources.

So before we are allowed to voice our concerns and opinions we have to do something to help the situation. If Mr. Williams can help only by paying his income tax, I would say that would be sufficient as he is one of the lucky 51% of Marylanders that do. Since when has the right of passage to speak on a newspapers website been coupled with the individual first having to "do something about it". Yeah, think about it, it does sound a little ridiculous. Using your logic no one from the Capital Gazette would be able to write an Opinion Piece without first detailing to you what they did to help the situation. I'll agree with you that the treatment facilities available country-wide are terrible but, they are still out there, and still underutilized. Its easy to attack someone who brings up a solution while forgetting what the root cause of the problem is.

First of all why do people think that I, or anyone for that matter, owe anyone a living? Second of all if someone in my family needed help with an addiction my family and I would get them the help and not lay around waiting for the county to show up and help. If people do not help themselves and want to play the victim they will simply become another statistic. And is mouthing off slang for trying to talk common sense?

Re: I am part of the sol - 2008-11-29 00:57:37
I am part of the solution
To Don Williams: You are part of the solution because you pay taxes to help addicts???? Get real! What decent programs in Annapolis do you know of?? Oh, that's right..you don't know of any because they don't exist. All in-patient drug abuse programs in the county have been slashed - there are only a few in the county(not even a handful) to help countless addicts that need help. Let's not even get into the ones that are available for those without insurance. The don't hardly exist. Before you go mouthing off about all the help available, you and our citizens need to do SOMETHING to help the situation. With treatment we would not have the magnitude of violence/poverty/homelessness/child abuse/unemployment to name a few. What are you, Mr. Williams (besides paying your "taxes" - where is your money going...do you know?) and the rest of us doing to deal with the disease of addiction? If your family member was in need of treatment for cancer would you be accepting our county's solution to it? I think not.

Unfortunately, a lot of what you preach is true to an extent. However, you are using the wrong vehicle for your message. This is the comment section of the Capital Gazette where individuals who wish to opine on a story may do so. To fault them for "only" commenting on these stories, in the "commment section" of all places, is a self defeating statement.

Good police work - 2008-11-27 00:03:42
Its good to see that the police were able to catch up to these individuals. All businesses should have well lit areas and security cameras in case the unthinkable occurs. Of course it helped that the victim/witnesses were able to make identification possible. In some way, society has failed to help these persons. Judging from the addresses, Betsy Ct. and Newtowne Dr., these persons lived in public housing. Having done installation work in public housing areas, I can see first hand maybe why we have failed. Kinda reminds me of Indian Reservations. Now how to fix the problems, that is a different story. Those who want to change and make a difference attempt to do so. Those who don't care, don't. Not everyone in public housing is a bad seed. A lot of the individuals I run into have decent jobs and are trying to make ends meet like you and I. The difference is we have more and they have less. They don't have new cars, flat screen tvs, Xbox 360's, windows vista or Macs. Some families have multiple children making it hard to go out and make that decent living. Of course ones taste in music and tv shows, obscene language, and drug use hurts those growing up, after all monkey see monkey do. So the vicious cycle just keeps repeating itself. So what can we do to help the young before it is too late?

Change we must - 2008-11-26 16:34:06
Wow all I can see in these comments is people complaining. I understand that everyone is upset that crime and violence is getting worse. However what are any of you doing to help the problem? Do you really think by coming in here and playing the blame game is going to help anything or anyone for that matter, no it's not? Hate breads hate, violence breads violence, drugs breads drugs and so on. For many of these young men and woman this is the only life they know because society has given up on them. Does it make what they are doing right, no but I don't see any of you doing anything to help the situation. All you do is blog about how bad they are and how they are dragging society down but yet you do nothing to help. Doing something wrong is bad but watching something wrong happens and doing nothing about it makes you worse than the person doing the wrong. Most of you are probably wondering what I do to make the chance. First of all I work on myself change has to come from with in first if I am no good to me than I am no good to anyone else. Also I help recovering addicts, we can only keep what we have by giving it away. I try to help people see that there is a better way of life and you don't have to live like that. I can't tell you how good it feels to finally be part of the solution and not the problem anymore. Maybe some of you should try being part of the solution and reach out and help someone instead of hating on them. Those who don't want the help will get theirs don't worry I have seen it happen to many people over the years. Bottom line we all have to be part of the solution and not the problem.

Can anyone tell me were in any of these comments It says they did it "because there black" Because i can't! the only thing i saw is that it said that there thugs and have long rap sheets. so to those who think that just because someone says there thugs or they have a long rap sheet you automatically assume that that person makes the assumption that the individual is black. well.....then that falls on you. so dont put words in peoples mouth and say there racist. your better off just adding a comment about the article.
OH ya happy thanksgiving.

What incentive - 2008-11-26 10:44:51
They will not change because there is no incentive to. In a culture and industry that cultivates violence and the "thug-life" these individuals may have some type of status. You can't change people who don't want to change or who don't receive the support they need from their family and friends.

GOD and Labeling - 2008-11-26 10:17:05
I thought it was god who judge's all of us! I bet if all of you owned your own businesses these so called thugs wouldn't have a chance to work for your organizations. Am I right? Talking about change, maybe that's all they know. I'm sorry, but some individuals don't want to change or they don't know where to start after already being labeled as a menace to society. Why don't you try to help those so called thugs, if you want a better society.

arrests made - 2008-11-26 09:46:47
In response to Emma G.'s prejudical comment about "already housing their girlfriends, and children", I find it to be morally disgusting! How dare someone assume that because they are black, and have criminal records that one, they have children; and two, that society has the responsibility of taking care of not only the children, but also the mothers. If you ask me, these are the type of comments that does nothing to better our society and dreams of becoming this "melting pot" that we are supposed to be living in. Why don't you do something better with your time rather than waiting for these types of stories to publish in the newpaper and writing ignorant comments about them. Let's not forget that all involved have parents and loved ones, or did you forget that we can read now?

Not Fair - 2008-11-26 09:22:45
If you take the 60's away, then the argument of oppression, racism and injustice fades away disallowing this card to be played, leaving only each other to blame. Now we don't want that, taking responsibility for your own actions would be unheard of.

Judged by God now - 2008-11-26 08:19:50
I'm glad the police are on top of this and making arrests. Drugs and Gangs are dragging on our society, and we are all tired of it. I grew up with nothing and tried extra hard to make a decent life for myself, worked two-three jobs at a time to live in a better neighborhood. Why can't those on Betsy or Copeland, or the other subject areas get their fathers, sons, and brothers OUT OF THERE NOW. And NO, I am not going to relate this to actions of the 60?s, how ridiculous, that card is done, move on and stop trying to play it. Life offers opportunity, you just have to seek it. Don't worry, I am not judging anyone, that's GOD job now, and the general public cannot help but to think these Thugs need to go, white, black or purple, they all need to go.

You're kidding me right? Yes, I think we all have problems but what separates us from these "thugs" is that we find mature and responsible ways to solve our problems, not sneak up on them and shoot them in a parking lot at 130 am. These people obviously do not belong in a civil society and should be locked away.

Capital always wrong! - 2008-11-26 01:41:42
Why can the Capital never get the story details correct? Do the reporters not live in the area? Do the editors never check the facts or spelling? Every single story I have personal knowledge of always has incorrect information. Where is the spell check, grammar check, fact check and overall edit check of the Capital stories? This is why I have canceled my subscription. Just like the schools disciplining my child for grammar and misspellings and then sending home newsletters with misspelling and bad grammar.

WOW!!! - 2008-11-25 23:01:38
I can't believe the ignorance that is in this society today. Your comments are not helping the situation anymore than the people that pulled the trigger. I guess all of you that are bad mouthing the individuals who apparently pulled the trigger have lives that don't have problems in it. Nobody's perfect in this crazy a$% world we live in. Nobody said anything about Hoover and how he targeted black people, despised the actions of MLK, the black panthers and the list goes on and on. How dare you call them thugs, when the real thugs is the government that initiated this whole retaliation ordeal in the first place. Yes they must be punished for what they did. Let's not forget how society used to operated back in the 60's, but it's us fighting our own race today.

Thugs - 2008-11-25 17:46:56
Thugs and neer-do-wells each and every one.
Sadly we'll have to house these miscreants perhaps for the rest of their lives. (I'm sure we're already housing and feeding their female 'companions' and children.) However, our revolving door so-called justice system will have the criminals back on the street in no time. Why can't these scum abide by the law and society's normal requirements for good behavior? Oh, I know, there ARE no guidelines for normal behavior Thank the Liberals.

Well,Well,Well...I think what you have said Mr.Brown is pretty darn ignorant, but we are all intitled to our own opinions, but we must not forget that these men that you call "thugs" was someone father, son and brother, I do not agree with what these young men has done, but all at the same time they deserve to be punished for the actions that they have chose to take in the situation, I am sure if it was a family member of yours, you would want the law to find the person and prosecute them to the fulliest, no matter the cost, It is sad that two more young men has lost their life to the world of violence, and for you to say just let them kill one another because they are nothing but "thugs" is very very ignorant of you, I am assuming that since you say they are "thugs"that you know these people personally ? I do not know them personally but I am not gonna assume that they are "thugs" in other words Mr.Brown, DO NOT JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER.....
