Gusting winds pushed the flames across the street, melting the rear tire of a parked vehicle, burning siding of three more homes, and charring the top of a nearby park gazebo.

Battalion Chief Matthew Tobia, a county Fire Department spokesman, said the blaze started at just after 10:30 p.m. Firefighters arrived at the scene nine minutes after the fire was reported and found the home of Yvonne and Stan Jaicks engulfed and flames spreading to two...

Sprinklers - 2008-12-10 15:00:46

Sorry, far from a salesman. Make your own choices, but as long as the tax payers in this county continue to allow homes to be built with no sprinklers, no hydrants, inadequate staffing for our firefighters, etc, this will be the risk....

Sprinklers - 2008-12-10 10:12:00

The cost of sprinklers is not as much as the opponents would have you believe. First, nobody is proposing to make owners of existing homes add them by law. Retrofits are about twice the cost. However, proposed legislation would require them in all new homes, much like PG County, Montgomery, Scottsdale, AZ, etc. The average cost is 1%. So all these $500k homes would cost and additional $5k. That is less than carpet. Stop thinking of them as an extravagent addition and a necessity like flooring or paint.

Alfred Parkinson knows what hes talking about. Retired Tower 39 Driver/firefighter for 30+ years. About the sprinkers Alfred is right who could afford putting sprinkers in, maybe these millionares could but the average Joe could not. The firefighter in this county do a hell of a job and should not be blamed.

Randy Hopkins - 2008-12-09 23:33:32

Randy, I think we went to school together.

I grew up in Bay Ridge, Most of the houses will burn to the ground with the lack of water and new lightweight construction. Remember the keys Farm Fire? The area wont change until there are hydrants in the area. I Thank all Volunteer and Career Fireman everywhere, and as for the public, they will never understand the judgement call of saving an exposure or the house that is fully involved.

Also no one seems to care that they melted a 300,000 dollar new fire truck on one side, Luckily no was was injured. You can replace a house, a car, not a life. Put yourself in the position of the engine officer from eastport was in, wind blown fire fed by 35 mph winds, and no water.

As a fireman myself, I wish everyone the best, homeowners included. God Bless,

I just looked at the houses that burned on Google Earth. Good lord, is there even 8' between those structures? Take this opportunity to call your council person and voice your support to the residential sprinkler bill 85-08. Perhaps when the homes are rebuilt their owners will invest in the added protection provided by a sprinkler system.

Mr. Parkinson, as far as your comment on training...you are right, in this field we depend on training. Most of us train many many long hours, but I would have to agree you can never have to much. This is what makes us the elite. I don't know you but I must comment and say that you sound like you have extensive history with this Department and perhaps this post was an opportunity to "grind an axe" as you sound somewhat bitter. I support these brothers and sisters and respect that they made the best decsions based on the resources available in those moments. If you have better ideas or think you are the better man for the job may I suggest you put in for the job the next time it becomes available and good luck to you.

Fire - 2008-12-08 23:23:45

I had the opportunity to listen to this fire ground operation as well last night. I must start out by saying that I too work in this profession and I see many of you folks doing what we like to call "Monday Morning Quarterbackin". As a taxpayer and homeowner you have every right to question what and how things were done but realize this...this is not your area of expertise I am sure. These brave men and women are highly trained and analyze every situation whether it be a fire or a motor vehicle collision differently. No two situations are usually the same. Weather, time of day, resources, exposures, entrapments, etc. Decisions must be made quickly and a plan set in motion. You must trust that these men and women have the education and experience to best serve this public. From the time the 9-1-1 call was made until the first arriving person was on the scene was under 10mins. A fire burning under the conditions of last night can be deadly, dangerous and fast. Please, before you "Monday Morning Quarterback", get some real education and please, as homeowners...take some responsibility. This is the time of year fire calls are up. Practice Fire Prevention, change smoke detectors, get your chimmneys cleaned, don't do uncontrolled burns in your back yard or leave candles burning. Before you buy a home, research the area. What are your water resources, what are your emergency medical responses? Have a PrePlan and be smart. Don't blame others for choosing to save what could be salvaged because sometimes that's just the way it is. Honestly, at the end of the day, you may have lost all of your material possesions but that's all that they are. Everyone went home and that is truly a blessed day.

From the time of AACO FD received the call and a FD unit arrived was 9 minutes , sorry if you dont want to hear that. It always seems long while waiting for us to arrive , but the fact is that we did arrive very quickly and went right to work. If you knew anything about construction , fuels then you would know house fires this day and age go up quickly , especially if you add wind...

Thats true (2) firefighters suffered minor injuires , its part of the job. For what those firefighters and officers had lastnight the fire went well. Everything can be worked on to be improved , but they did excatly what they were trained to do. Save life , property !! The dwellings that were on fire were going to be a total loss anyways , its called risk vs benefit !!! RISK ALOT TO SAVE ALOT , RISK LITTLE TO SAVE LITTLE.

I know your training and your work history but good way to show your support for your fellow brothers. Do you even know what that means. You are a sad sight for us(firefighters) , stay over on the shore and dont worry about us. Brooke , I am sorry do you have fire training ? I guess we cant plan for the perfect storm can we ? We can plan and plan it just doesnt happen like that. And sorry to tell you they did have a plan , yes 3 houses were lost but it could of been 5 or 6. I guess the chiefs didnt have a weather alert on their side , come on we can argue what if's all day. Fireboats were called but due to them calling numerous alarms their staffing were already committed on apparatus. Bc-35 had 2 seconds to make a decision and you have had a day now to quarterback it.

Fire - 2008-12-08 22:50:41

There is no one anywhere that is disputing all of the efforts made by the fire fighters. Their efforts and tremendous courage and hearts are very appreciated.

And what happened last night is not going to be cured by a closer fire station. Without Water, a fire cannot be put out.

What is being disputed is the plan. There was none. The fire boat was not called initially. But engine after engine was called. If you knew the area, you would understand how useless it was to have 30 engines in the neighborhood. And presumedly the fire department knew the neighborhood. The engines sat running for hours blocks away.

There were four points of egress for equipment to get in and out, yet they could not get the tanker in as there was so much equipment in the way.

And the water started, but stopped because the hoses put in the Bay were not long enough, according to Tobia this morning. The tides were low. The tides are typically very low in the winter. This is not at all uncommon. It took another two hours to get the water going again. By that time three houses were engulfed.

Again, what comes into question was leadership and a plan. There were a hundred fire fighters milling around with no water. And no plan. Many were discouraged and embarrased.

Annapolis Neck as well as many other communities exist without fire hydrants. We are surrounded by water. Why didn't someone know the tide was out, as it is in the winter. Why didn't someone count on the worst condition? Why were 30 trucks called into a neighborhood where they could not get close to the fire?

Tobia talked as if everything happened right away. It absolutely did not. There was no need to lose three houses. They sacrificed the three because they had no water to make another decision any earlier.

Again, God Bless every fire fighter that came. But without a plan, they were set up to fail.

Right on!! It is sooo easy for these people to sit back and say what should or shouldn't be done, and as of yet I do NOT see any of them out there putting their lives on the line, so I have one thing to say to them, Look in the mirror and talk to yourself because we do NOT want to hear it. Maybe next time they should not worry about letting the wind swept embers ignite the other homes and let them burn too. Ungrateful and unbelievable. Oh, and Alfred, why aren't you still fighting fires? You seem as though you know so much from being a fre fighter, why aren't you doing it anymore and why are you not supporting your fellow firemen when you should know of all people (with the experience you say you have) how the weather sitaution last night played an major role in what happened.

Oyster Harbor - 2008-12-08 19:25:09

Parky,
Hopfully this can be resloved without getting a new fire chief, with a new bay ridge fire station coming in May what promises that this kind of thing won't happen again? I want to say the firefighters did there best in what cards they were dealt. As I said before it might have been a different story if the winds werent so bad, no excuses though when there is a fire anywhere there should water supply right away. When I did hear Battalion Chief 35 got on location he immediatly called for the 2nd and 3rd alarms.

Oyster Harbor Fire - 2008-12-08 18:16:09

Fire Battalion Cnief Matthew Tobia of the AACounty Fire Department wasn't the first on the scene last night. Yet Tobia has made several claims about his performance to the CAPITOL which don't match my direct observations at the fire.
He reports crews put water on starting 3 minutes after arrival. But, no water was put on the any part of the fire until a fire boat arrived after 11 pm. The houses at 3302 and 3304 Shore Drive received no water until 1215 am when the hook and ladder men finally got a full flow onto the remnents. The Chief says that nearby houses were protected by firemen. They were not, despite the ardent pleas of the owners. We are told that the tanker crews couldn't get water from the Bay. True. However, there was deep enough water in Oyster Creek not 25 feet from the Jaicks' house. We told the crews time and again. The Chief's story is just the opposite of the reality. The house at 3300 Shore Drive received no water until it was thoroughly ablaze. That house is less than fifty feet from Oyster Creek. This fire was close to engulfing the entire community. We need fire protection - The city and the several counties supplied 30 fire trucks, 100 firemen, and no water for 2.5 hours! Chief Tobia has not told the people he is sworn to protect anything like the real story.

Oyster Harbor Fire - 2008-12-08 16:03:05

I was listening to operations on this fire last night, the engines were having trouble drafting from the bay because the tide was going out, fireboat 41 was the only fireboat that could get out, Queen Anne's County, and Calvert and the rest of AACo fireboats could not get out because of tide. Wind played a big part in last nights fire, if not for the gusty winds the fire might have been much different. As for the other poster firefighters should have more training on drafting.

Fire in Oyster Harbor. - 2008-12-08 15:51:44

I live in Oyster Harbor and I live just around the corner On Ellis Road. I don't believe the Fire Department was there in nine minutes. That house had gone up in flames so quickly that I feel it was burning for more than 9 minutes. It has been a problem on the whole Peninsula including Bayridge. If a house is on fire in our neighborhoods, it is a good chance that will burn to the ground. This needs to be changed NOW.
