Michael Steele, the new chairman of the Republican National Committee, told students at Archbishop Spalding High School yesterday that there has been a long road to electing the first African Americans as president and national GOP chairman.

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele spoke at Archbishop Spalding High School in Severn Wednesday. Steele, the first black lieutenant governor of Maryland and the first black chairman of his party at both the state and national level, was invited to speak at the Catholic school for Black History Month. He discussed race in politics and issues currently before Washington, D.C.
Steele, also the first black lieutenant governor and Republican Party chairman of Maryland, said Black History Month is an opportunity to look at the people who made it possible for President Barack Obama or himself to take their places on the national stage.
