Under current law, which dates back to Prohibition, wine can neither be shipped from outside the state, nor within it, to Maryland homes.
So if a wine enthusiast wants to swirl a pinot noir from a small vineyard in Napa Valley, for example - one that can't be found in his neighborhood liquor store - he can't order a case online and have it delivered to his doorstep. Instead, the law involves a three-tiered model, using a state-licensed wholesaler as a middleman between the retailer and the consumer.
Currently, residents...

Why Of Course - 2009-02-22 23:50:10
Spirit and Beer Lobbyists don't make the laws. They just contribute heavily to those that do.

Why? - 2009-02-22 22:28:27
Why is this kind of law still on the books? Ummm...geee...it wouldn't be because the liquor lobby is more powerful than the average consumer, would it? Couldn't be. I, for one, have little interest in ordering my wine online, but it would sure be nice to have the option. It's time for this state to get into the 21st Century.

Wine Restrictions - 2009-02-22 19:21:38
Absolutely dumb to continue this restriction. I order wine over the internet from a Maryland retailer but I am forced to drive to their outlet to pick it up. This does not protect any Maryland retailer. Let's have government focus on important things and eliminate these restrictions.

Liquor Laws - 2009-02-22 14:08:16
Kind of like the alcohol laws in the state too... Ever notice how you can buy a beer at 7-11 in Ocean city, but not other areas?? Isn't it also amazing that EVERY creek or in A.A. county just happens to have exactly 1 establishment that serves liquor,, Cooincidence? I think NOT !

Liquor controlled by Md. - 2009-02-22 13:38:05
I tried to get a certain imported Vodka in Md. but Maryland authorities control EVERY brand sold in the state and even though most (If not all) other states allow the brand I wanted but not The Peoples Republic of Maryland! You'd think they would allow something from a formerly Communist country as Md. is already near-Socialist and 'Progressing' towards Communism every day.

Wine Shipping Laws - 2009-02-22 13:04:37
I am very much in favor of legislation which will overturn Maryland's arcane direct wine shipping laws. Maryland legislators need to stop buying in to the fallacy that underaged drinkers are going to use this legislation to get alcohol; it's a cop out by legislators that receive campaign contributions from the opponents of this legislation.
I urge our state legislators to get with the times and with the countless other states and allow Maryland consumers freedom to make purchases when they want, and how they want.
