German woman donates marrow to Arnold toddlerPublished 03/11/09
Avery Schlesinger depended upon the kindness of a stranger to save her young life.

Walter saved Avery’s life three years ago by donating some of her bone marrow, which was transplanted when Avery was 6 months old in July 2006. The two met for the first time in February. Today, Avery is a 3-year-old running through her family's home in the Mago Vista area of Arnold with the speed of a colt. "I have toys," she said, showing off a spiky rubber ring on a plump pink finger. The benefactor who saved her life - a young woman from Germany and a total stranger until recently - is equally bubbly. Jana Walter, 23, is a college student at the University of Wurzburg in Germany. Three years ago, Walter was asked to donate her bone marrow to save Avery, even though the two live thousands of miles...
