In the county, unemployment shot up to 5.9 percent in January, the most recent month available, according to the Department of Labor Licensing and Regulation on Friday, from 4.8 percent in December.
That increase accounts for nearly 3,000 more residents in Anne Arundel without jobs during that time frame.
And in Annapolis alone, the jobless rate climbed from 4.7 percent in December to 5.8 in January, with more than 1,200 additional city dwellers out of work.
