One of the firefighters was trapped in the engine, but eventually was freed.
He and another firefighter were taken by ambulance to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore with serious but not critical injuries, said Fire Department Capt. Debbie...

Cost of Fire Engine - 2009-04-30 15:44:47
Just a bare bone standard Engine with equipment runs about 425-475K. For 100K you can get pretty much get a bush truck. 4x4 pickup with small tank and gas motor to pump the water.

Maybe we'll break even? - 2009-04-30 12:48:15
I do not believe the county has removed any firefighters (removed being - laid off, let go, or fired for the purpose of saving funds) at least for the last 10 years, as a matter of fact, they, as well as police or others related to emergency, have always be exempt from let-goes / freezes / eliminated positions. I agree with you for the cause of more volunteers, for many government or quasi government departments have indeed requested personnel to fill the gaps. I appreciate your comments and knowledge, as well as your rational and pleasantness, thank you. I do wonder how much a full equipped fire truck goes for these days.

Back at ya Jen. - 2009-04-30 12:23:27
The county had to remove some paid firefighters out of some stations to save money. This has been going on for months now in A.A county and PG county. Thats when the county asks volunteers to really step up. It is a fact that Ferndale did save the county that much. If you go to archives and search for "Ferndale volunteers commended" it's date for 4/13/09. I do understand where youre coming from with a $100K fire truck when comparing situations. Losing control can be a drivers fault, however so can driving conditions. I would only be assuming that weather had a major factor in this incident given the conditions that night. LOSAP dose equal retirement in the since of getting money for your service, but its not based off a percentage of a salary. It's biased off of time at the station, drills, classes, number of calls ran, meetings etc. If I'm understanding your question correctly. Your right about the workmans comp issue. You can't file a claim with your primary employer for something that happen a second job. With that said, your other job (where you got hurt) can cover any expenses you have (lost wages, medical, etc) from your primary employment if youre out on doctors orders. Your primary employer is not required to compensate you for injuries on another job. I didn't misunderstand you at all. I respect where youre coming from as a citizen and tax payer. My goal is to provide information that a can from the other side (not supporting negligent act, if any). Volunteers always get a bad rep because the concept of us doing it for free but money is still spent. But thank you for your educated and well thought views.

No such thing as a free volunteer - 2009-04-30 10:34:30
Please dont misunderstand, I appreciate all the volunteers (fire, shelter, etc), love them, need them, cant live without them! I have volunteered for several things as well. My point is I would like to have more information about "Losing Control"which must be driver error, and which will cost the taxpayers. When someone else wants to spend my money, I want to know why. Half the problem with the governmental system is that no one can ever fully explain expenditures. I do have a couple questions about your comment, just for clarification, Doesnt Length of service pay equal retirement (sort of or otherwise)? I have worked two jobs before, if I get hurt at one job, they (workmens Comp or otherwise) do not pay wages for the other job, as a matter of fact it is illegal to file a claim against an employing company for an injury that did not occur during designated working hours for that company. The VFD saving the county 75k is extreme at the least. If you compare apples to apples, save 75K (during what county furloughs ?) vs. spending over 100k for this "losing control" incident. Well, someone here is in the negative, and as usual, it will be the taxpayers. Still, I hope the Capital will follow up on this story.

Jen - 2009-04-30 09:56:24
Jen... You are right about a majority of things other than the retirement. But I appreciate you doing the research. Volunteers get LOSP (Length of Service Pay) Its sort of retirement but not really. It's a little stipend given to you for your service. It's not like other retirement of which you can live on. As far as the compensation while out of work, it's the same workmen compensation that anyone gets if youre injured on any other job. When you get hurt on a regular job in some way others pay for it i.e. lower wages, higher health care cost, etc. You get it only if you get hurt on the job. As for citizens paying, I believe a story came out about Ferndale Volunteer Fire department saving the county $75,000 by fully staffing the station during the county furloughs, while working their own fulltime jobs. But that story hardly got any attention. Please don't take my comments out of context (unless youre Tina). I appreciate anyone who wants to understand the volunteer fire service. I know that most people have a certain image of volunteers but not fully understand the organization. Thats not a bad thing. 99% of us would love to professionally explain what our service is all about.

Liability - 2009-04-30 08:21:32
John...The county will pay for everything. The men volunteer, but they are insured through the county, which will pick up the tab on all medical issues. The truck, which yes they own, the county will pay to replace it or buy it from them and they will replace it. Also, if the volunteers miss time from their pay job, the county pays them back for that too! Not absolutely sure but I also believe that after 20 years of volunteering, the county pays retirement benefits. I know someone who is a volunteer and that is where I get my info, but just call around and check things out if you find all of this as hard to believe as I do, sad but true. The county pays, which means, just like I said, we pay. I still would like to know what lost control means, and how much that driver errors is going to cost all of us.

Tina, hi its me again, the one that keeps calling you out. It doesnt matter what the investigation report says because you would find something wrong with it anyway. Just answer one question for me. Where are your verifiable credentials to comment the way you do? I believe I called you out on that in an earlier post. As Rick M. stated, that's a bare minimum to drive in A.A County. I highly doubt you have even a Drivers License.Political incest?? That's not even worth a comment. So Doctor, firefighter, police officer, President Tina...where are those credentials. Or at least tell us what days you are what so we can keep up.

Drive a Fire Truck - 2009-04-29 15:25:28
You too can join as a volunteer and get cleared to drive the AA Fire Truck. First, you have to become a fire fighter by taking fire 1. Then, you have to take EMT-B, then throw in HAZMAT, AED and Pump Operator. You then move on to take emergency vehicle driving operations. Now you are finally cleared to start driving with another cleared driver as side saddle until you get enough time to be cleared to drive on your own. Its not a simple task.

TERRIBLE spelling and grammar...
From these simple clues I have surmised, and this is in no way intended to be a personal attack, that she is not employed at all. I would guess she is a home body on government assistance or SSI and probably in government assisted housing. The emergency room is her primary care doctor and is a frequent user of the EMS services to get a free ride to the ER - and EMS are no longer all roses and smiles when they pick her up. My guess is PD has "harassed" either her or her kids and she is well known to her local cop(s). Dealing with "the man" to get her benefits every month is a real chore because you can't call 911 to get a ride there. That would explain the distain displayed for government workers. OK, maybe I ASSume too much, but given the clues I don't think I'm too far in left field. Tuna, my friend, life is what you make it. My friend, you are coming across as a very bitter and petty person who is just angry with the world. I hope you, my friend, have a wonderful day! BTW - I'd like to learn how to drive a fire truck. I've wanted to ever since I was a kid; with all your free time, do you think you could teach me?

Lost Control?? - 2009-04-27 15:59:45
You know, this is a county owned vehicle that sustained heavy damage, also 5 county employees that were taken to the hospital. Tthis is a very big deal, and the tax payers will be paying for the damages. I don't think anyone is attacking the wonderful heroes, but questioning how this happened. I'd like to know what lost control means exactly. Also, this should be handled as any other accident with a full disclosed report when it is determined what happened. Why is it that whenever a county, state, or any governmental entity is involved, there never seems to be many facts released. I think this is what irritates people.

LOL at Tina - 2009-04-26 13:00:36
"Well yes actually I do have that skill, but obviously the driver in question does not!!! There is but one condition that would allow the driver of the Crashed Truck to remain without blame and that is black ice. I don't think it is possible that was the problem the evening of the crash. The driver neglected to take into account the unusual handling characteristic of the vehicle and also showed no regard for th. e conditions in which he was driving--the driver was clearly at fault. Thank you"
You honestly just proved everyone's point how ridiculous you are with that comment. You have the skill to drive a fire truck? Get real Tina. Stop trying to use that as an excuse because your wrong, [as always]. If you truly understand what it take to drive one of those trucks, you wouldn't be on here making a fool of yourself, posting uneducated comments. So I'm going to call you out, Post your verifiable credentials on here and maybe I'll retract my comment. I'm sure it's not likely for me to do that because again just by your post, you prove that you don't have any credibility to back them.
As bad you you bash public service, the reality is, is that when the 911 call comes in we still have to respond to people like you. Police, fire or whomever. I don't know what traumatic incident you had with any branch of public service to always post negative comments but what ever it is, get over it. Much as you hate to admit it, you need us just as much as we need the community support. Yes Tina, there are some bad apples in every job field that's on this earth and I think everyone should be held to the highest standards and accountability. This driver is being held accountable for his actions, however, his driving is not negligent. Being held accountable is not always a bad thing. With this incident some retaining and practice could happen. That's what we do a professionals. We learn from our mistakes and we learn every possible way not to make mistakes happen again. But does that eliminate the possible chance of an accident? No.
You seriously need to get an education on all the issues you comment about. Saying that you know how to do everything when you get called out just tells everyone how much of a joke you really are. What next your going to tell us that you don't need a Doctor because you are one? Seriously....lol

Unbelievable ! - 2009-04-26 09:23:38
Tina... unless you know exactly what it's like to manuver a large, heavy vehicle through tight neighborhood streets, while taking into account other vehicles, other drivers, others as in pedestrians, road conditions, distractions from the dispatch radio, the emergency at hand and the pressure to arrive there as quick and uneventless as possible... then please refrain from negative commenting on the actions of these heros. They constantly put themselves in harm's way for idiots like you and deserve our support. Before you know all the facts about what happened, zip it !!!
He may indeed be at fault, or maybe not...but I'm sure your opinion is something his family or his fellow firefighters don't need to here right now ! Maybe you should spend less time judging others in your court of unpopular opinion, and instead, focus on the criticisms of fellow Capital readers who constantly disagree with your twisted way of looking at the world !

Tina - 2009-04-25 20:44:52
The saying "Beating a dead horse" is an under statement when addressing your comment. However, I felt I needed to register and comment about this issue. Just like all of the other comments that I have read (your post), you express no knowledge of anything. You have no credibility on anything. You preach this rhetoric about issue you have no clue about. As a firefighter, I do have the credibility to comment on this issue and give my honest opinion. With that said, common sense (of which you obviously lack) would tell you the turning radius + weight + rainy conditions + lack of light could have the potential of having a crash. For you to think its negligent is just simply stupid. Yes, fire trucks are big and it takes a lot of skill to drive them. Do you have that skill? The disheartening thing is that people that criticize this driver forget to mention that no one was seriously injured or killed. Why is that Tina? Simple, its because of training and skill. So while youre sitting there trying to prosecute a firefighter for doing his job, trying to protect the community, try for once and think like a human being and put yourself in his place. He's the one that has to live with the fact that something went wrong and it almost cost the very lives that protect YOU. No one in their right mind wants to be in that position and God Bless him for his and the whole crew service that they provide. For those who criticize that "Fire Truck driving fast with no lights" or "Speedy response in your neighborhood" seriously, join the fire service so you can understand why these things happen. People cry about tax dollars and etc. but do nothing to solve the problem. Volunteer. Firefighters are not above the law in any way shape or form and no department stands for anything when it comes to breaking the law. What does it prove, Tina, to break a law in the fire truck?

Unfortunate - 2009-04-25 14:43:17
It is unfortunate for sure. And it was an accident, let's move on and just say that the driver was driving too fast for conditions and leave it up to the police to cite him if needed.
Emergency Vehicles are not exempt from the laws, and the drivers need to be held to the same standard. Unfortunately it is not always the case.
Last month there was an accident involving two school buses when one rear ended the other one that was stopped at an intersection. No citations were issued, but there were 50+ kids who were pretty upset. And even moreso when the school district and police let the driver who crashed resume his route in a new bus that was brought to the scene while the others were towed away.

Right now the thing that matters most to me are the firefighter that were hurt. To them and their family's. You are in our prayers. God Speed.
A firefighter saved my life once. For them I am truly grateful. Accidents do happen. In fact I was acting a fool when I was hurt. I had no regard for others. After that I learned I was not the center of the universe.
I have a second chance, and do not judge. Only comment from time to time. I really enjoy ready ever ones post.

We all should be thankful that none of the fire fighters were hurt in this accident.Everyone should understand that the driver of a engine has class A license, which would suggest to me that he has more training than most drivers, this could have been caused by a mechanical failure not driver error. As for Tina who cares shes crazy Linda and works for the capital i think. I googled her and the only thing that comes up is her to posts to the capital curious isn't it?

you people are so very right and I admit my comments were flawed by a dislike for all thinks district 31. Bu in order to fit in here, and not get lost in 'thumbs down' world, I am now going to adopt an ideology that seems to win positive votes. I am become a right wing ideologue. I will listen to and repeat everything that I hear on WCBM. I will put down all things Obama, and take on the attitude of true Amurican Patriot .
I will put God back in our schools, I will devry high taxes, and I will no longer look at neoc0ns as white, blue collar, poorly educated minions. I will no longer preach of fighting the man, but take on the attitude of 'the man'.

It would be a totally different story if they were on the way to help our your family. When it comes down to someones life sometimes its those precious seconds, minutes, or even hour that is the most critical in helping that person survive. They rescued me from my car when i was in a horrible accident because someone ran a stop sign. I couldnt have asked for better service. I thank each and every firefighter at RBVFC. And once again, im so thankful that my cousin, as well as the rest of the firefighters made it out of that firetruck ok.

People are all talk - 2009-04-23 15:31:19
Wow I believe that a couple of people need to go back to college and retake a physics class or two. "There is no way to wreck a fire engine" - reallysince when were we able to defy the laws of physics..It was that whole chapter on center of gravity and possible some portions of momentum. Anyhow, it is amazing that people jump to conclusions of an accident involving men and women whom put there lives on the line for others. All of them risk their lives everyday to keep people safe. Accidents happen and these individuals have to drive and maneuver these huge vehicles multiple times everyday. And if you weren't complaining about there high speeds then you would be most likely devastated that they didnt arrive to the scene in time to save your dying child.
It is not inexcusable to have a accident - it is unfortunate. How many crazy people in this state get into a vehicular accident while commuting to the office in their lifetime ( especially when the weather mention "snow") - TONS in this state ( I just moved here so I think all of the drivers are crazy here and that is why these paramedics and firefighters are much needed). These firefighters drive about a hundred times more than your average American working man or women, making their chances of being in an accident higher. Especially with that monster vehicle they are driving and the amount of time that they have in order to get to a scene to try and salvage lives.
Does anyone think it is possible that the driver maybe lost control and in order to regain control and NOT flip the fire truck, he corrected and the utility pole was struck. Personally I believe that a flipped fire truck is much more devastating - especially to those inside the vehicle- than one that hit a utility pole and god forbid knocked out service for a bit. So I guess I am jumping to the conclusion that the driver decided that his friends and coworker lives were more important that a utility pole - and as somebody stated before - a fire truck can be replaced - a life cannot.
I think other can direct their negativity to the real criminals and crazy in this state - you sure as heck have a ton of them! Dont direct your outlandish acquisitions towards someone who might just be saving your behind someday. Everyone makes mistakes, I am sure that EVEN you have - luckily your mistake wasnt as public.

Lucky #13 Strikes Again - 2009-04-23 13:58:20
Riviera Beach Volunteer Fire Department #13 has had numerous problems, and this time it knocked out power to the community theyre serving causing hundreds of taxpayers money out of their own pockets. It has been proven that RBVFD has been corrupted in countless incidents including sexual activity on the property, consuming alcohol on the premises and responding to calls while intoxicated, assault between personnel, pornography on station computers, and embezzlement. They also pick and choose which calls they want to go on. The Fire Chief lives down the street from me and speeds up and down our road going between his house and the station. Our road is 25mph. This is inappropriate, unecessary and poses a danger to my family and neighbors. It only seems like short intervals between episodes of more drama from station 13.
I do hope the firefighters are doing well after Tuesday nights accident.

My Fire Department - 2009-04-23 11:15:42
Im disappointed to seeing the sassing of the Riviera Beach Fire Department. I live a half a mile from their station.
These volunteers protect my community and have answered thankless calls to my neighborhood and ungodly hours. My family and community are in their debt.
The weather on Tuesday was very wet due to thunderstorms> The roads were slippery. I can easily see that the truck could of easily had a spin when making the left turn on Ft Smallwood. They hit a tlephone pole to their right near Laurers Supermarket and across the street from McDonalds. It was dark foggy night (11:00 pm) Its tough turn for their fire trucks and trained drivers. Its also been a location of many car accidents.
It was an accident due to weather and a slick intersection.
Yes I spent a couple of hours in the dark.
Traffic was detoured all day. No problem or complaint. BGE worked hard to restore power.
Im just very glad that no volunteers were seriously hurt. They are my neighbors.
They are also protectors of the community.
The Fire Truck can be repaired or replaced
but not these brave individuals.
GOD BLESS THEM!

No excuse! - 2009-04-22 23:59:44
I think Tina Schubbie should run for public office. She knows everything and she's perfect. She also has the amazing ability to determine who's mentally ill, as in the case of the young man from Cape St. Claire who killed himself. (If I were the Goetzke Family I'd haul her a** into a court of law for a defamation lawsuit) And now she's decided that there is no excuse for an accident that happened in the last 24 hours that hasn't even been investigated. What skill, to be able to judge people and condemn them without any facts. I actually log on to this forum daily just to see if she can top her ridiculous statements from the day before. As Mark Twain once said. "It is better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt." Ms. Schubbie has removed all doubt!!

Were you involved in the accident? You seem to be making a very very large assumption about what happened in that accident being that you were not in the back of the engine. It would be better off that you wait to see what the investigation report shows before going and jumping down drivers throat.

Seriously. I have called Riveria Beach VFD several times over the past few years complain of their speed without sirens, and the reckless driving of their personal vehicles when responding to marine calls without any identification. I am not as concerned about the power as I am the recklessness of the drivers. The utility pole did not jump in front of the fire truck and that could have been a pedestrian!

Seriously? - 2009-04-22 19:21:26
Fred is that what you seriously care about? Your power? 5 Firefighters were hurt responding to an emergency and all 5 were hurt. 2 of which were taken to shock trauma. And all you care about is what time your power was restored? How about you take a look at the bigger picture and be thankful that these firefighters came away unscathed and intact. Most times it does not end up this way. Those firefighters are in my prayers.

BGE - 2009-04-22 18:48:33
If you are going to report the story get it right. Power was not restored at 2:30 a.m. Power was restored on Wednesday afternoon at around 1:00 p.m. I have a basement full of water. Because BGE was lying to it's customers as to when power would be restored.BGE are jerks!
