Gregory Ruiz wants you looking for crabs this summer - but not the iconic blue crab.

Courtesy of Ashley Arnwine, Smithsonian Environmental Research Center Carin Ferrante of the Smithsonian Environmental Research conducts monitoring for mitten crabs in the upper reaches of the Chesapeake Bay last summer. No mitten crabs were found in the Chesapeake last year, but scientists still think the crabs are here and want people to look for them this summer.

He wants you to look for the invasive Chinese mitten crab, a small, odd-looking critter that has fuzzy fur on its claws.

Ruiz and his colleagues at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Edgewater are in search of more mitten crabs, in hopes of determining how widespread the mitten-crab invasion is.

"We're really interested to know what the status of the crabs are on the East Coast," said Ruiz, a scientist who runs a Smithsonian lab focused on marine invaders.
