He wants you to look for the invasive Chinese mitten crab, a small, odd-looking critter that has fuzzy fur on its claws.
Ruiz and his colleagues at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Edgewater are in search of more mitten crabs, in hopes of determining how widespread the mitten-crab invasion is.
"We're really interested to know what the status of the crabs are on the East Coast," said Ruiz, a scientist who runs a Smithsonian lab focused on marine invaders.
