Jones' death wasn't 1st incident for suspect

Published 06/14/09

One of the teens charged in the death of a 14-year-old boy on a Crofton street last month was arrested in an eerily similar attack on another boy less than three months earlier, The Capital has learned.

The Capital agreed not to identify the child who was attacked or his family so they could talk candidly about the incident and about problems with local gangs in the neighborhood.

The 14-year-old victim said he was walking to the Crofton library to study with a friend on March 9. He was on Riedel Road near Tilghman Drive when he saw three teens on the other side of the street, one riding a bike and two walking.

One of them said, "Hey," but the victim kept walking. They called again, and the victim finally responded. The three teens accused him of being a snitch, he said. He told them he wasn't and that he didn't know what they were talking about.

The next thing he knew, they were punching him from behind, he said. He fell, and they broke his glasses and hit him in the eye. After five or six punches, a jogger stopped, spooking the assailants, and they ran away, he said.

The victim wasn't seriously hurt, his mom said, but he was shaken.

"My son was terrified," she said.

See an index of stories about Christopher Jones' death at:
www.hometownannapolis.com/crofton_death.html

The incident is strikingly similar to the May 30 death of Christopher D. Jones, for which the same teen is charged.

Christopher was riding his bike on Nantucket Drive after leaving the local pool. He came across a group of boys - accounts vary on just how many were there - who police said assaulted him, hitting him in the face and neck. Christopher tried to pedal away but fell, hitting his head on the curb.

Two Crofton teens, 16-year-old Javel M. George and the 14-year-old boy, were charged with manslaughter in connection with Christopher's death.

Neither Christopher nor the other victim was part of a gang, their families said, and neither family knows why their boys were targeted. Both were outnumbered, hit in the face, and fell to the ground.

The victim who survived his attack said he didn't know the boys who assaulted him. The 14-year-old was the only one arrested; the other two were never identified.

The state Department of Juvenile Services recommended the teen be put on voluntary informal supervision for up to 90 days. He also was supposed to write a book report and complete some community service. But, the victim's mother is quick to point out, those conditions aren't mandatory.

The victim's mother tried to appeal the decision, but her three phone messages to the Department of Juvenile Services weren't returned, she said.

Now, she's writing letters to whoever will listen in the hope the boy gets a harsher sentence if convicted of Christopher's killing.

"I'll keep writing," she said. "I'll keep doing what I have to do."

Christopher's killing has spurred an outcry about gangs in the neighborhood. Police have identified two feuding gangs in the area: The New Threat and the East Side Diamonds.

The groups are loosely organized and have few members, but the killing brought them to light, officials said.

People in the neighborhood know who the gang members are, at least the ones who cause trouble, the victim's mom said.

Since the assault, her son doesn't even want to be outside. He said he doesn't know why he was targeted, but he's afraid there might be some retaliation against him for identifying the boy. The two didn't even know each other's names before the attack and they attend different schools, the victim said.

After the attack, the victim started a rumor he had a gun so that others might be afraid of him, he said. But the plan backfired when a bus driver caught wind of the rumor and called school officials, who then called his parents.

He'd finally grown more comfortable with going outside his house around the time Christopher was killed, his mom said. Now, he's regressed.

"He won't leave the house at all," she said. "He doesn't even like going on the deck because he's afraid people will see him."

He had planned to get a job at the nearby Dunkin' Donuts or Kentucky Fried Chicken for the summer. Now, he's going to get a job near his father's home in Glen Burnie because he's afraid to cross the street alone.

The attack and the gangs in the community are "not something I would have expected," the victim's father said. "I want to protect him, and I can't."

The boy's fear has left his mom in an odd position: on one hand, she doesn't want her child to be afraid to go outside; on the other, as long as he's not out, nothing can happen to him again.

"I don't like it that he's scared," she said.

For now, some of the gangs have been quieted by extra police presence in Crofton, the victim said.

But at the same time, he added, other kids are trying to start gangs. They want to be cool, but they also want to have people to back them up so others don't "mess with them," the victim said.

"This is them trying to be cool," he said. "A whole bunch of dumb, stupid kids trying to be cool."

S.Brady - 2009-06-20 09:17:11

That was one of the most hateful things for you to say, to actually get personal with me about my son. You have taken this conversation about what happened to Christopher D. Jones and changed it into something that is ignorant and hateful towards me on your part. I never once attacked you yet you attack me for my personal experiences. Those that do not understand something and choose not to are those that we should fear. Because they choose to beleive if no one else think's like they do, then they are the ones who are wrong. From the Ku Klux Klan to extreme African-American hate groups that preach about hate toward white people and anyone else who is not like them, choose not to understand other people and have intolerance for their fellow man, that is their malfunction. Some how or another you have made this personal with me why? I have no idea and if all you can say is I mispelled a word or two here and that makes you feel good about yourself then fine, so be it, make yourself feel good. The thing is what you are doing towards me with your remarks is no different than being a bully in person. Which is why Chrstopher was bullied for not thinking like they do, for being himself more than anything els. Your just being one here in trying to have it be an opinion about a serious situation about what is going on with the youth of today. That's cool but to write that I had nothing to do with my sons education is just mean, ignorant and spiteful. I have tried to write things for people to understand and see another side of certaine areas. I never once said they had to agree with it, but it is something they may not know about. If people choose to not understand then that is fine, but one thing I will never do is knock someone for what they say. Isn't that the part of the Constitution that we love so much that we can speak how we please and know that we have the right to so. I will tell anyone I do not HATE anyone why? it is such a waste of positive energy. Or any group, people can hate me all they want they can call me all type of names and that is fine. I will defend their right to do so and not tell them they are wrong, I would say try and see it this way, but if they want to feel a certaine way towards me then so be it. I define who I am, not anyone else or whatever names they may call me. What happened to Christopher was a tragedy and you turned it into a way to dismiss and berate me. I hope you find some happiness in life because only people who do not like themselves and blame it on others do what you have done, and that is to try and break someone down who was just speaking their mind like everyone else on here....

Reggie learned a new word! But it's the same ole soup in a different pot. Reggie/Tina in my humble opinion, who cry's racist constantly is the biggest racist who posts here. Racism is a two way street my friend, you can be black and be a racist also. I find it disturbing that you and others on here come to the defense of each and every black person discussed no matter the crime or topic, you have an answer or have it all figuerd out. Its your inability to see the forest for all the trees in the way that makes no sense. I got you figured out, sitting there in your home typing and laughing, so proud of yourself, finally found a place where you can anonymously voice your silly little racist opinion. You need to get out more but I understand its probaly not safe to leave your home in your neighborhood......

RE: Hate, Hope - 2009-06-18 19:38:52

I have not posted anything with ANY racial overtones. All of my posts are stating FACTS. It's sad when we must overlook the obvious (FACTS), or we are deemed racist. I don't have hate 'in me', but regrettably I don't have alot of tolerence. Unless we deem this type of behavior unacceptable, it will continue. We MUST STOP making excuses for murder, calling it 'mistake'. It might sound hard, but it has to change.

Hate, hope... - 2009-06-18 16:06:29

You don't know their parents. You don't know these kids, any of them. They hit this kid. It happens every day in the US. This kid died. They didn't intend to kill him. They didn't plan to kill him. It was a horrible mistake and tragedy but you have to keep your humanity or you are no better than those who you disparage. I'll say again, this is a tragedy, to be sure, but it's also a tragedy for these kids caught up in the criminal justice system. There are a lot of racial overtones in the posts on this site. Crofton is not a ghetto. Do you even know what the word means or are you just trying to communicate your racial preference? My heart goes out to ALL invovled. Mr Thomas, you seem to have a lot of hate in you, and that is sad. Hate is how we got where we are. You are certainly not helping matters. I have a 'troubled' kid that lives a few doors down from me in Crofton. He used to drive around crazy and had a real bad attitude. I confronted him one day and explained that I would rather he didn't act that way because of my two small kids who play outside a lot. He puffed up. When I didn't back down, he realized that he had to deal with me and eventually apologized. He has stopped his behavior at least in our neighborhood. Then I met his father. And now I know why he is how he is. At least his father doesn't drive around crazy, but he's most unpleasant. Have hope, old man...

Seriously off - 2009-06-18 12:26:11

Michael...you are seriously misguided. Your line of thinking has gotten us where we are now...They are not 'kids', and they didn't make a 'mistake'. They killed a 'kid' in an act of pack violence, like animals. They should be put down as such. If they get off, hopefully they get killed quickly, and are not able to further the cycle of violence that thier parents bore them into. The only compassion I have is for the victem's family.

Tragedy - 2009-06-18 12:02:29

The kids that did this are not animals. They are human beings. They made serious mistakes by getting involved in gangs and hitting this kid, causing his death. But they are not animals. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. This tragedy is real for everyone involved: the Jones family, the families of the accused and the community. We don't need to denegrate the people, we need to deplore their actions. Crofton is (thankfully) a very diverse community. This is not a racial issue. Death penalty for these kids? Where is the compassion for these children? How would killing them change anything other than compound the sorrow and tragedy? I have more hope than many here. That is also a tragedy that you have no forgiveness in your life.

I hope both of the animals who committed this HATE crime get the death penalty and if not maybe someone in jail will take care of them. They will get what they deserve one way or the other. Reggie posts in order to counter the racist, bigoted knee-jerk opinions of the right wing minions. He also wishes to serve as a mirror for the aforementioned minions by utilizing the rhetorical methods they have developed by listening to their leaders on Talk Radio--gross generalization, hyperbole, melodramatic blather etc...But Reggie also has an extremely high IQ and does in fact use this platform to entertain himself by the ability to pull the strings of the right wing minions. Finally Reggie does in fact have a gift --his truths are not self-evident to the minions and rarely do the minions get it right. His truths , though not self evident often come to light weeks, months, or years after they are poo-pooed by the minions Moreover, mr. George's civil rights were violated and he should be acquitted without much of a battle.

Jean R---there was a different version on the court hearing.
His attorney is looking to try it in juvenile court, and is citing shoddy police work including an illegal interrogation and confession. They also said that before they questioned them, they had him cleared and placed at a different location?? Did Javel take one for the team?
I just hope that there is not a mistrial.
And as to the ME, it was also based on reports from the police, so it looks like that may be questionable.

Lost wages, probably an Attorney, which Javel George has two of by the way, medical bills etc. I guess you and your "lifestyle" could afford an emergency expense of 20,000+ huh. Yeah right! I hope the Jones' sue the crap out of the parents of these animals in civil court for wrongful death.

people get punched all the time and rarely die from it my friend. Let me see a copy that report . Anyway, like I said people get punched all the time, everywhere and rarely die. It was not intentional though admittedly a tragedy for those affected. As a side comment, why are there funds being raised for this child's family ? Aren't his parents gainfully employed ? I mean, there is no law against getting tax free dollars for bad-parenting but it seems sort of a sleazy way of getting a few extra dollars.

Helmet? - 2009-06-17 14:13:03

I honestly had the same reaction as Harvey and Reggie. As a parent, I thought 'how could this have ended differently?' I thought that IF the poor kid died from hitting the ground/curb, a helmet *MIGHT* have saved his life. It's not about shifting blame from the kids that hit him, it's just about hoping that this could have been avoided.

It's a tragedy for all involved. Of course, it's the worst for the Jones family, but the families of the other kids are suffering as well. People are very angry, clearly. I do my best to be out and about in the community and have had confrontations with a few kids in the community. I would encourage others to do the same. Get out of your car, your house, and walk around or ride your bike around. It's easy to sit around and armchair quarterback this stuff. What if YOU were outside strolling around when this happened? Would the kids have attacked him if YOU were around? Maybe not...

One never knows such things. But we must cling to hope that there is something small, almost insignificant that we can do to help prevent things like this from happening. The police can't do everything. The politicians wait for the problems to come to them, it's up to us. We must be a part of the community that we want to exist.

This is a tragedy. I know what I can do to help prevent something like this in the future, however small. Together we can all contribute so that it might actually end up having a significant effect.

S.Brady - 2009-06-16 19:05:46

You know people who do not actually experience things like others have will say something like what you did. That is fine but as I said there was a code for all and believe it or not, all natinalities have one. Everyone knows who in the family is going to college and who is going to be the working person and who is going to do whatever in life. People as a communitty used to look out for one another. Now we have kids doing random acts of violence and people want to put it off as kids being kids or blaming parents which is a convience. The schools do nothing to stop it when it happens and when that happens kids end up killing other kids. I bet if the school had taken the threats more serious and not just random "ridiculousness" then maybe he would still be here. Do not think just because you cannot understand something from someone elses communitty that it is ridiculous. I do not think you would like someone to say the same to you for how things are done in your neighborhood or your culture for that matter. Which brings us to the whole tolerance issue of accepting people and how they live and repsecting it because if these kids had any repsect for others this could have been avoided. S.Brady, are you teaching your kids acceptance and respect of others while you are sitting there telling me to take my own advice of to sit down, shut and go to shool. I guess I am just supposed to turn a blind eye when I see kids destroying my neighborhood and the communitty at large. Or what, am I supposed to vote for more jails instead of better education what? tell me. What am I supposed to do if I cannot be mad at what is going in society today. My son graduated today from the 5th grade and has been accepted into a very prestigious prep-school. He is as smart as they come, he has been invited to join the Center for Talented Youth prgroam at Johns Hopkins Univerity. My sons classmates harrassed and bullied him because of this, because he is smart and chooses not to go the thug route. I will never stop until this type of non-sense it stopped and kids like my son and Christopher D.Jones can go to school and not be harrassed and bullied and killed as in his case...That may be fine for you but not me..Oh one more thing.."I is a college graduate, B.A. Clinical Psychology Minor Black Studies...Just so you know miss perfect......

Ridiculous Helmet Comment - 2009-06-16 15:14:43

By the way, the reason Christopher actually fell off of his bike is because he was dying from the horrendous beating he had just endured at the hands of these vicious animals. The preliminary autopsy stated he died from SEVERE HEAD AND NECK INJURIES. The poor child with whatever consciousness he had left in him, was attempting to escape his killers when he finally collapsed.

Reggie you have again made a complete fool of yourself with your ignorant comments and by agreeing with other ignorant comments.

As far as a response to this article, I am not surprised that this little thug has been arrested before for the same thing. If the justice system worked properly, this little thug would have possibly been off the street. Who the hell is resposible for this thug? He is 14 years old. He was arrested 3 months ago for assault, why is allowed out of his home? I guess I should already know the answer to this, his "parents" are thugs themselves. They should be sitting in jail also, they are criminals too for not parenting this little thug.

Thank you John F., Jean R., Rachael B. and the rest of you that recognize a moron when you see one! Whether or not the boy's parents made him wear a helmet is not the issue. Parent responsibility (on the part of the victim) is not the issue. Parent responsibility on the part of the murderers is another story...

Helmet ? No way! - 2009-06-15 20:32:20

I imagine the final autopsy results might indicate if a helmet would have saved his life. And if it proves not, most likely the charges will be upped to first degree murder.
At Eye On Annapolis, we have had many conversations, comments, and emails from neighbors, family members, and friends. One scenario kept coming forward complete with a name of one of the other children involved.
From what we have heard, the two that were arrested, approached Chris and the YOUNGER one threw the first punch. Chris and the younger boy were fighting, and Chris actually had the upper hand. Then the 16 year old got into the fray and kicked him in the head. Several other friends of the two (the number we have heard is 3 additional for a total of 5)also become involved and many were throwing kicks and punches. When Chris got away and back on his bike, they all ran away.
That is the story that is most prevalent--granted it is hearsay, but if that is true, there is no way a helmet would have protected that child.
But, we will wait a few more weeks to hear the final results of the autopsy.

Do us all a favor and put down the pipe! Crack a book instead of smoking crack. That can be the only explaination for your comments. You can be the best parent in the world, problem is you can't protect your children 100% of the time. The only parents at fault here are the parents of the animal thugs that were charged. Their parents should be in a cell right next to them. For you to even imply ANY wrong doing by Chris' parents is sickening! I am willing to bet you do not have kids after going through some of your older posts on different stories. You are nothing but a liar and an instigator and a sad, derranged person. You never have, or will experience the kind of pain the Jones' family is going through. So stop with the lies and zip it. I am officially done with you.

the issue - 2009-06-15 17:20:24

my friends, the issue is parental responsibility. As a parent I am 100% responsible for my childs well being. I should know what my child is doing and with whom he is doing it. I am responsible for my child's safety. These are my values my friends, and they have served me and my children quite well.

Why are we even arguing about helmets and Reggie, he/she doesn't even use a real name! The sad facts in this article are that the 14 yr. old thug/animal in the Chris Jones murder had attempted the same thing just three months prior. First of all Reggie, you really should do some proof reading before you post. I did better than that in second grade. I don't think so. I don't think you know the meaning of the word (or how to spell it for that matter).

Last I checked the labels on helmets didn't claim to protect your child from a savage beating by a group of crazed animal thugs. It is amazing how you make every situation about yourself! If you do have children trust me NO ONE CARES, except for the fact that they are probably the next generation of thugs out there praying on our innocent children. Then again, you are probably lying to suit the situation to yourself as always.

Harvey, Get over yourself. My point is that the animals that beat this child, Im sure would have gotten past the helmet. As I said before, wearing a helmet is a law and I make sure to tell the neighborhood kids to put theirs on if they dont have one on. However, it seems as if Reggie was implying that Chris's parents didnt do their job. People are looking for ways not to blame the as*h*le kids that did it. They are using the helmet as a cover up. Reggie Schmoenberg, are you serious? I don't understand why they even let someone like you post on here. A helmet would have made no difference. When a gang of ignorant ghetto dwellers that live off of working class peoples' tax dollars attack someone, they punch, kick and stomp in the face to inflict as much damage as possible, and the reason they have "rights" is because of bleeding heart liberals like you. This country is going to hell because of the democrats. I can't even turn on the TV any more because all I see is the democratic driven media praising a man that has never run so much as a fast food restaurant.

Do us all a favor Reggie, keep your mouth shut if you don't have anything sensible to say, and you never do.

Rachel, wearing a helmet is not a black or white issue. Wearing a helmet has nothing to do with racism. I can't believe that you are putting people down who have commented about wearing helmets and the possibility it could have saved someones life. Obliviously you are a very uninformed person and I can only guess that if you do have children, they don't wear helmets when they ride their bikes.

What I am saying - 2009-06-15 14:18:52

About the helmet issue, as a cyclist and a parent of 3 I am demand that my children wear their helmets from the moment they sit on a tricycle. They learn to love it. Furthermore, If I was unfortunate to have to live in Crofton and have my child beaten while riding his bike , I believe I could at least get a little solace knowing my parenting mattered as he had his helmet on when the attacked occurred. My parenting matters and it matters most when i am not around to protect them.

What it REALLY is... - 2009-06-15 13:21:14

Come on, A Bike Helmet? Of course it is the law but these animals had all intensions of hurting and or killing this child. Im pretty sure the helmet would not have helped. The law enforcement failed when they didnt keep the kid they caught the first time locked in a cage where he belongs. Someone needs to stand up and recognize this as a hate crime and deal with these kids the way they should be dealt with. Thats right! A bunch of Black kids killed a White kid. Just sad how our community will look the other way. It sure would be different if the situation were reversed. Makes me sick. Now a family is without their son because of a bunch of nonsense that could have been prevented.

My condolensences to the family of Christopher Jones.

One thing could have possibly saved this young boy's life, a helmet. I don't want to seem calous but it is the law that helmets are to be worn by all bike riders under 16 years of age while riding on pubic areas. Parents, make your children wear helmets while biking, skateboarding, rollerblading, etc., and set a good example by wearing one yourself when you do the same.

Your comments are nothing more than random ridiculousness...You need to take your own advice and shut up, sit down and go to school. BTW..You may want to use spell check and learn to form a complete sentence before posting future comments.

We Have to Make it Stop - 2009-06-15 08:24:50

When I moved here over 15yrs ago from San Francisco it was because of two reasons, the economy and the safety. The neighborhood I grew up in was turning into a gang infested middle class area just like Crofton. There was always people selling weed at the park but there was also respect for certaine individuals and I know that sounds a little off but it worked. Certaine people were off limits, you never messed with the families, and if a person was going to school getting good grades and doing something with themselves they were off limits because they were not a part of the "game" that was going on. I was off limits because the guys knew I was not like that element and I gave them their respect as well, it has to go both ways. I could walk through my neighborhood without a problem. The OG's had my back, but when crack came along the neighborhood went down hill the game was up for everybody and I knew I had to go. I lost friends and my nephew lost a dear Uncle, he was one of the OG's who had my back.

These are not kids trying to be cool these are kids who just don't give a damn plain and simple. See I am a dictator in my home meaning you better not do some type of non-sense to get sent to jail. If you do, don't call me because I'm coming with a bat, you better call your father. None of these kids have any reason other than they just want to do these things. And for the Black folks who want to cry about Civil Rights, get over it you have every opportunity handed to you it is not the 60's, 70's or even the 80's. Especially since you are "at-risk" so shut up, sit down and go to school. Because like I told my mother about my nephew who is just as bad as these kids, society will just put them away if they think they can just do what they want and I say fine. I am sick of seeing people who had the same things I had as a kid or someitmes better get handed things because they chose to become a drug addict or a dope dealer. My mom and dad worked hard you see it too many times on Judge Hatchett and other court shows "we will get you some counseling", that needs to stop. If the parent is not hit in the pocket the first time their child does something then the kids will continue to do what they want. The first time that child has detention at school make the parent have to spend it with that child. If that parent has to take off from work then so be it or better yet if that parent is on public assistance and gets money for that child take a certaine amount from the parent each time the child does something. It is the same with car insurance if the child has an accident then the parents have to pay more money, if the chid is a bully in school then the parents must pay restitution to the child the was bullied....If we stand by it it can be done...Make the parents accountable period....
