MdTA's new E-ZPass charges begin todayPublished 07/01/09
Starting today, the Maryland Transportation Authority will impose a surcharge on E-ZPass accounts as part of an effort to collect $60 million.
Paul W. Gillespie - The CapitalStarting Wednesday, E-ZPass users will have to pay a $1.50 monthly surcharge for the service. The Maryland Transportation Authority announced this change in January, along with other measures that are expected to garner about $60 million for the state. In January, the authority announced a proposal that would increase tolls and add fees to E-ZPass as a way to raise revenue. In May, tolls for three-axle vehicles increased at state facilities, including the Bay Bridge. And now, E-ZPass users will have to pay a $1.50 charge each month to use the service. You can shop around to other states that don't charge fees for EZPass if you are an occasional user like me. For the 10 times a year I use it it certainly isn't worth the $18 surcharge when I can get a free one from Massachusetts or pay $3.00 a year in Pennsylvania.
