That's only one of the reasons he'll be remembered.

"He's a true icon in Severna Park," said Andy Borland, a close friend of Gillespie, who died Monday from complications of Parkinson's disease.

Gillespie, who was 76, founded the Green Hornets' softball and girls' basketball programs in the early 1970s and later devoted 17 years - 1987-2003 - coaching at Severna Park High School and constructing a Hall-of-Fame career, while developing and mentoring hundreds...

Every thing in the article is true about what a great coach and mentor Joe Gillespie was but you can't emphasize enough the impact he had on so many young people.

He was my coach as an 11 and 12 year old baseball player and he taught me as well as so many others through example how hardwork and perseverance can turn a bunch of decent players into a very good baseball team.

Coach Gillespie, you will live on through the lessons we pass on to our kids and those we now coach.
