Hundreds protest taxes at City Dock

Published 07/03/09

About 200 people gathered at City Dock in Annapolis yesterday to protest federal and state tax policies and complain that elected leaders are turning a deaf ear to their concerns.

Joshua McKerrow — The Capital About 200 people, including this crowd cheering on speakers, gathered Thursday at City Dock for a tea party protest on federal and state tax policies and what they called unresponsive government leadership.

"We're mad as hell at our government," said Severn resident Joe Mallary. "Everything we've complained about, they've passed anyway."

The protest was the second such event held in Annapolis this year, though yesterday's protest drew a significantly smaller crowd.

Organized by the "party-neutral" Anne Arundel County Campaign For Liberty, the event was an outlet for citizens who disagree with the...

Jobs help pay taxes too - 2009-07-06 16:49:08

Governor OMalley is quick to blame the global recession as if there were nothing he could do to bring jobs back to Maryland and increase the financial well being of middle and lower class citizens. When the taxpayers are the contributors to the tax coffers of our richest US State, does it take the mind of a Buffet to realize that Marylanders need the good paying jobs that were sent to INDIA, etc. After globalization spread Americans wealth around the world, we now see the disastrous results. How long will it take Congress and the Maryland legislature to realize that Americans need to bring back every job sent overseas if they are to return to financial stability? The middle class is continually compelled to pay Billions for other nations catastrophes, under globalization and other giveaways, and also pay Billions for illegals free benefits, when many illegals brag that they will return to Mexico to live like kings, and when taxpayers cant afford the benefits they give to foreigners. Decades ago, when Catholics contributed to the Church, we knew that the moms, pops, children and the elderly in our own community would be helped! WHEN WILL this Catholic GOVERNOR REMEMBER his ROOTS, and that CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME? Also President Obama needs to put the middle and lower class taxpayers first, now that he has given billions to corrupted financial institutions, and badly managed car manufacturers, who refused to retool and make competitive cars. It is past time to get jobs back so Americans can build financial stability, afford homes, food, health care and retirement; and time to stop giving away our wealth to immigrants, legal or illegal, until US citizens can afford what we give away, instead of being fiscally irresponsible, and making our grand children pay for our delusions of grandeur.

KUDOS!!! - 2009-07-06 15:41:53

We need more good Patriotic Americans to start reminding all of the politicians (Blue AND Red) that they work for us, not the lobyists. Sure, for some people, this was a chance to get out and complain about Obama. These folks are jumping on a bandwagon... The ones that organized these protests last year during the Bush administration are the same ones organizing them today... they are truly Independent groups who see the truth... That Bush and Obama aren't really that different in terms of their actions... it's congress that has failed us by not checking their power appropriately. Leadership on both sides of the aisle in both houses have royally screwed the American people for the last several decades. Forget about your party's stated agenda... they clearly don't follow it. Watch what they do and guide them, loudly, toward your ideals. It is the only way ahead.

Ridiculous Policy - 2009-07-04 12:45:00

This thread is the perfect idea why the Karma policy on this site is idiotic. You have two sides to this argument, one on the left and one on the right. Neither side will ever shift their position based on the arguments of the other. In fact, they will feverishly "thumbs down" each other's postings in order to bury them from view. That being the case, I had to click to unhide more than half the comments on this thread. Give it another day and ALL the comments will be hidden. Could we all just be grownups and agree that someone's words and ideas are not so poisonous to necessitate hiding them from view? I mean, we all know that these aren't really discussions or debates. These are platforms for members of the right and the left to accuse each other of doing the very things that their own side does. And that's fine, I suppose. But if we all accept that up front, do we really need this rabid, mob-rule censorship policy?

Response to a racist - 2009-07-03 22:43:07

"I take pride in paying taxes to our country. It is a shame when a bunch of whites get angered by an African American being their President" Perhaps you should have been there or at least look at the video on this site. Charles Loller has spoken at both Tea Party events and has had the support of darn near everyone attending. There was a line of folks of every skin pigmentation and place of origin waiting to shake his hand after he spoke at both events.
He's an American Patriot who happens to have dark skin and is of African origin. Remember Crispus Attucks? He was a Free Black and took a bullet at the Boston Massacre. Don't play racist games against people of color or lack of color. We're ALL Americans and the only colors we see are Red White and Blue.

Why is it? - 2009-07-03 20:21:28

State income taxes here are almost 10% whereas other states, including Obama's Illinois, is only 3%?

Obama has called for making life more affordable for the middle class. Well, here in Maryland, the middle class is paying out the nose through property taxes and hit hard again on income tax. The tax system needs to be fair. Anybody defending Maryland's tax system has not been truly listening to Obama.

I wish that transparency, openness, and accountability were three words that could be associated with local and state budgets as well as local school systems.

Any time the economy turns sour or the threat of cutting spending is mentioned, the automatic response seems to be resistance. Information requests need to lead to understanding and trust, not denials and run arounds.

What good are expensive schools if no one can afford them and there's no jobs upon graduation?

Taxes - 2009-07-03 19:44:27

I take pride in paying taxes to our country. It is a shame when a bunch of whites get angered by an African American being their President. Where were the protests when George Bush was President. These same whites didn't mind paying taxes then.

Obama has inherited the worst economy in history. He has invested millions to the economy which in turn will create jobs then get distributed back to the taxpayer. Everyone should give Obama a chance before having their pathetic little rallies.

Afraid of Change - 2009-07-03 19:28:45

We live in a country and world that has seen vast socio-economic and cultural changes. Traditional American culture defined as white American culture is threatened by the growing diversity that is modern America. I think this is one factor that scares a certain type of white person. If you take a look at the photos todays Tea Party you will not see any people of color. That could say any number of things. The organizers also explicitly avoided any political party affiliation, although the messages communicated by the Tea Baggers are clearly very conservative Republican ones. Its probably just better to identify these activities as such.

have some compassion - 2009-07-03 17:49:48

The Tea party-people should not be ridiculed. They are trying desperately to find their place in a world that will change forever. Their experiences have not allowed them to realize that things that worked in the past, can no longer work in a world that is crowded, and where what we do affects everyone around us. Luckily they are allowed to gather together to speak in unison so that their frustration is not vented in destructive ways. Let the rest of us, true modern day patriots, gently and patiently guide them into the 21st century. Oh the times they are changin'.

Taxes - 2009-07-03 16:12:14

I'm sick of the complaining. Go ahead, destroy the planet, let people go without care, let the bridges and roads crumble under your feet, let the public schools rot, and keep pumping money towards rebuilding two countries that will probably turn into failed states anyways. Want the good life here and not pay taxes? Then throw a few bake sales to pay for roads, schools and tanks. I'm sorry, but Annapolis to me is relatively affluent--notice the boutiques in the mall and the overpriced homes? Not exactly skid row here.

The only reason you know that it's the right wing that organized and attended this event is that we're the ones who are trying to defend YOUR civil rights and liberties. The billions spent by the Bush administration is nothing compared to the TRILLIONS the Obama administration has spent in only 6 months! In due time you'll find that just because someone is handing out cash doesn't make him a savior. Furthermore, the mess our country is in isn't because of the Bush administration, it's the Clinton administration that told lenders to ease credit standards in order for Americans--whether they could afford it or not-- to be able to buy a home. By the way, I'm republican and I make a meager living as a carpenter. I know, I know. You don't want to stand up for anything without the government crutch holding you there. I hope you get everything you want at the mall with my hard-earned money... and choke on it.

The rightwing Republican party have their teaparties and complain over taxes and government ad nauseum but I don't hear any of them come up with workable policies that will fix the mess their corporate fatcat buddies and the Bush admin. got us into. And where were they for the last 8 years when Republicans were spending billions of tax dollars on unnecessary wars and "reconstruction"?! Billions were lost and unaccounted for but I didn't see any "teapartys" then!
