County Council yanks slots billPublished 07/07/09
A key bill to allow the state's largest casino at Arundel Mills was withdrawn last night, but county politicians vow to resurrect it. The zoning legislation to permit slot machines near the regional mall is only one element necessary for the casino, and opponents saw only a temporary victory. "It's one battle, but this isn't over," said Joseline Castanos, a resident who has led neighborhood opposition for months. County Executive John R. Leopold asked the County Council to withdraw the zoning bill and three related bills, saying he wanted the vacancy filled on the seven-member council before a vote...

Why wait for the state commission to weigh in the applications? Why do you have to wait to see if an out of state, bankrupt company finds enough money to buy off a judge, build a casino, and have money left over to run it properly? The issue will not go away by ignoring it. Any political advantage in waiting for the state to decide where the casino will go is being lost by the appearance of ineptness.

Under Councilmember Jones' logic, do we have to wait for a U.S. Supreme Court Decision to finally resolve this issue as we continue, the State, to endure a huge financial meltdown? Who is pulling your strings, sir? You will answer to the public or maybe some other type of agency because your logic or lack thereof does not compute. I'm sure that there are many eyes outside the State watching this circus. Maybe, we need some outside intervention to find out what the real reason is for the this farce. Does $5 million dollars in lobbying money ring anyones bell? Let's here from some members of Russett and their thoughts on having slots at Laurel.... you should weigh in because a lot of money was spent to earmark it there and it appears that a lack of a viable and or legal applicant there will not derail this train from heading to your neighborhood. Will your councilmember protect you?

Just vote - 2009-07-07 15:53:49
Politics as usual. The citizens of the state and the county (and even the district that surrounds Arundel Mills) all voted for slots tom become legalized. The exact boundaries were stated in the referendum on the ballot.
Now some are having voter's remorse.
But it is time for the council to make a decision. They are posturing to ignore this to get through another election cycle.

Why? - 2009-07-07 14:20:09
Why does this saving grace have to be in the north of Anne Arundel County? Aren't we more than adequately over-developed? Why not take a look along the Rt 214 or 2 corridor? Let's share the load with the rest of the county.
