County gets more illegal immigrants deported

Capital Gazette Communications
Published 07/19/09

A county policy instituted in 2008 to quickly refer foreign-born inmates to federal authorities is putting three to four times more undocumented immigrants on the path to deportation than before, according to county statistics.

Find Us On Facebook

Officials with Immigration and Customs Enforcement expressed interest in 170 inmates in just the first six months of 2009 - almost twice as many as the 87 inmates who were detained in all of 2007.

"Illegal means illegal," said County Executive John R. Leopold, who ordered jail staff in March 2008 to begin reporting foreign-born inmates to ICE within an hour of their arrest, rather than once a...

What's funny is when I needed to use Social Services when I got sick and could not work I was denied because I "had" worked. I have been working since I was 18yrs old and the services I have paid into for all of those I can't use but someone who comes here and is only in the country for 24hrs get to use them. Someone who is here to get money to send home and not pay taxes on said money gets to not only use them but to exploit them because that is what it is really. It is exploitation of our public service system, someone needs to really start coming down on them. People get tired of seeing someone who is here illegaly working in a place and they do not speak any English and mess up your order. Now try being African-American and have them look at you as if you are "CRAP" because they have already been taught to think African-Americans are nothing but drug dealers so why do they need respect us, like when I tried to tutor this little girl. They actually told me how surprised they were when I showed up because over the phone I "sounded" White..Now go figure...Yeah I am tired of being taken advantage of as group of people and and as a Nation...

Executive Order 24.... - 2009-07-22 09:47:13

Is indeed a WONDERFUL thing. However, there are still far too many jobs going to illegal aliens because of employers who know they can hire them for a lower wage. We NEED to go after these employers. When illegals can no longer find jobs, they will leave our state. And having illegals gone means that our tax dollars no longer get abused by them. A recent study estimated that for every LEGAL TAXPAYING household, we spend an extra $1,200 PER YEAR to fund illegal aliens. I don't know about you, but I would love to save $1,200 each year rather than throw that money away on services & health care costs for illegal aliens. We MUST go after the employers of illegals. E-Verify is something that ALL employers should use. I went into a local McDonald's, and asked the manager if they used E-Verify and he said he refused because he considers that discrimination. DO YOU BELIEVE THAT? How is E-Verify discrimination if you check EVERY employee to make sure they are legal citizens of this country??? Think about that next time you go through a McDonald's drive thru and the employee messes up your order because he/she can't speak English. McDonald's pretty much admitted with that response that indeed they DO hire illegal aliens, and will NOT use E-Verify because they consider that discrimination. What a crock of crap! They should WILLINGLY check each employee, especially in these tough economic times, to be sure they are giving their jobs to legal taxpaying citizens of this country, NOT illegal aliens who are evading taxes, using taxpayer funded services to their advantage, having anchor babies who are using our public schools even though they do not pay taxes in our school system, etc........BOYCOTT MC'DONALDS! And let's get rid of CASA while we're at it!!!!

Executive Order 24 - 2009-07-21 16:07:07

Every contract, purchase order, and bid that goes out from Anne Arundel Government has "Executive Order 24" included. This states that the company agrees they will NOT hire illegal immigrants.

WOW - 2009-07-21 07:52:01

As scary as this reads along with the comments there is some part of me that is in agreement with the people here. Having lived in San Francisco and seeing how you can apply for food stamps and get money to get an apartment within 24hrs of being in the state has destroyed California. All you have to say is that you have no place to live and there you go. By allowing people who are not tax payers get free everything(health care, housing, food stamps) I can go on something must be done to ensure Maryland does not go Bankrupt like California. It is sad that a country that was founded by people who came here for a better life is now flooded with some people who come here not to make a better life but to exploit it and take the money back to their country. I actually tutored a daughter of an illegal(mother and father). I did not realize it until after I got started. Here you have someone who is not supposed to be here because they snook in and they are treating me like I'm the criminal. The mom was a maid and she stole the miniatures from the hotel she works for. She had a bunch in her bathroom one day and the next day I came back they were all gone, like I wanted to steal her funky stuff. Her son said to my son when he brought out his HotWheels "don't steal my cars". I am sick of people coming here and thinking they are better than me because I am African-American. I set her straight and told her that her daughter was failing and that if she did not do anything now she will never read. But what will happen is that she will get a scholarship to an Ivy League school because inspite of he family being illegals she "worked" hard to make a better life. The mom was "supossedly" the only one working yet they have a new Mini-Van and a new Ford F-150 in the drive way and food from a pantry in their house. Yeah they got to go...You do not get to come here and think you better than me and use up my countrys services and send your money back to your country...

Yes, employers are to blame........ - 2009-07-20 19:18:42

That is exactly why we need to subpoena the records of CASA of Maryland. On their website, they solicit employers who are willing to hire illegals. In their section labeled "Hire Workers", CASA states: "To ensure a high degree of professionalism, CASA distributes identification cards recognized by the local police to each worker who uses our services." (Which means they need to give their workers ID cards since they are illegal aliens without proper documentation). Also stated on their website, they say: "All of your information is kept completely confidential and we uphold a written agreement between you and the worker." (Which means they promise the employers they will keep their illegal alien hiring practices quiet). So there are lots to blame here.....the illegal aliens who flock here, evade our taxes, and abuse our taxpayer funded services to their advantage. Also to blame are the employers who hire the illegal aliens,....if there were no jobs for them they wouldn't be here. And also to blame is CASA, for using OUR tax dollars to aid & abet illegals in our state and use our tax dollars to hook them up with employers in our state. I still think if we go after CASA and find out who is on their list of "employers who hire illegals", we can really nip in the bud our illegal alien problem here in Maryland.

Exactly M. Donnell.... - 2009-07-20 17:02:17

So apparently illegal alien women love their illegal alien husbands sooooo much, (despite the fact they abuse them), they now won't report those crimes for fear their wife-beating, illegal alien spouse will be deported if put in jail for the night. Doesn't make sense to me, but I'm guessing pro-illegal advocates are just grabbing at straws to cry foul yet again at our government enforcing it's immigration laws. Oh, and for those of you who see parking lots filled with illegals hoping to get picked up by a contractor for a job, or if in your neighborhood you see a house over-crowded with suspected illegals, there is a simple way to contact and report it to ICE. Here's the link:

This quote puzzles me. "He argued battered spouses and witnesses to other violent crimes won't call 911 for fear they or their loved ones would be deported". I'm questioning battered spouses that won't call 911 because their LOVED ones may be deported. Do they really love their abusers that much??

huh? - 2009-07-20 15:06:24

I'm not generally quite as anti-CASA as most of this board but even I have to call out their flawed argument.
Illegal aliens won't call the police for fear of being deported?!?!
Doesn't this argument then extend to drug dealers and people with outstanding warrants. They don't call the police either because they know the police will arrest them for their illegal activities.

Sanctuary indeed... - 2009-07-19 21:00:52

But at least the new license that our stupid Government decided to give to illegal aliens looks different than ours, and is labeled "not federally compliant." This gives all of us the opportunity to easily identify illegal aliens. So I say anytime you see one of these "special" licenses that identifies a person as illegal, call ICE immediately. Lucky for me I work in a profession (that will go unnamed) where I often have to ask to see a persons drivers license, and everytime I see one of these illegal alien licenses I will be certain to forward their name and address to ICE.

YAY - 2009-07-19 20:43:41

I wholeheartedly agree as well. But, the issue will not be resolved on a County level. Maryland is currently a sanctuary state where we enable illegals to get official ID--a license. Granted the legislature tightened it up a bit but there is more to go.
I agree with Leopold "Illegal is Illegal"

CASA is a big problem.... - 2009-07-19 12:21:17

CASA of Maryland is in part funded by OUR tax dollars. CASA aids & abets illegal aliens in our state. They help illegal aliens find jobs with OUR tax dollars. They bail illegals out of jail with OUR tax dollars. They produce pamphlets teaching illegals how to evade questions from the police using OUR tax dollars. Maryland indeed is a magnet for illegal aliens, and the legal taxpaying citizens are sick & tired of it! It stinks to know that as a legal citizen, my tax dollars are being used to support illegal aliens in my state. And as a former teacher, it repulses me to know that art, music, and sports programs are being cut ALL THE TIME from our public schools to make room for the high number of illegal alien children who are entering our school system in need of ESOL classes and special-services programs. Why should I have to fund extra money for illegal alien children when programs for the children of LEGAL TAXPAYERS are being cut? Friends, our local government is flooded with pro-illegal alien pandering officials who will bend over backwards to keep the interests of illegals above those of us who pay their salary with our tax dollars. It's time we vote out these officials who feel it's more important to roll out the red carpet for illegal aliens while forcing US to foot the bill. I say Leopold should be our next Mayor. He seems to be one of the only leaders in Maryland willing to kick the illegal aliens to the curb in order to stand up for legal taxpayers! THANK YOU MR. LEOPOLD!!!!!!

Illegals go home ! - 2009-07-19 11:51:00

I couldn't agree more with Brian A.... the state has become a magnet for illegals because of previous lax regulation and lack of action on the part of local authorities. All one needs to do is take a mid-day ride down Kenilworth Ave in Hyattsville to see how bad the problem is getting. Scores of Hispanic immigrants waiting at 7-11s, liquor stores and other business parking lots for day labor jobs provided by cheap and unscrupulous contracting firms, no doubt they are tax cheats themselves ! My neighbor was dringing in Baltimore a few months ago when a car load of drunk illegals plowed into his car... the driver, who later tested 1.6 and his buddies ran from the scene after the impact... the driver too injured to go far was arrested... he had no driver's license or insurance and the tags were stolen... car purchased in Virginia from a used car lot ! Who pays for his neighbors injuries and demolished car ??? That in itself is a growing problem with illegals.

Whooo Hooo! - 2009-07-19 11:23:11

This is the BEST news I have heard all week! Considering that the Maryland unemployment rate continues to skyrocket, it's time to rid our beautiful state of Maryland from the illegal alien slime balls who are evading taxes, using taxpayer funded services to their advantage, and who are stealing jobs away from legal, taxpaying citizens! This is GREAT news! Now if we can only subpoena CASA of Maryland and get a list of the employers they send their illegal alien friends to find employment, we can really start ridding our state of these criminals! It's fantastic to know when these illegals get put in jail we are now able to screen them and send them packing back across the border! If only we can round up all of their anchor babies and ship them out too, maybe our public school system wouldn't be so overcrowded with children whose parents evade state taxes and therefore don't pay any money into our public school system, while so much of OUR tax money is being used to fund programs for these illegal alien anchor babies who don't speak English! It's time to take back America folks! Deport them all!!!!!!! Yippieee!
