Man gets 7 years for intentional hit-and-run

Published 07/22/09

An 18-year-old Glen Burnie man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for "door checking" two young brothers last summer in Queen Anne's County.

Prosecutors said that Nathan Wade Hartley Jr., of 7878 Americana Circle, intentionally ran over the 11-year-old boy and his 15-year-old brother on Aug. 29 in Chester Harbor because he was bored and it looked like fun in a video game.

"This was particularly disturbing," said Deputy State's Attorney John Mark McDonald, noting Hartley's "complete lack of caring for his fellow man."

He said that Hartley did not know the boys and had no...

Nobody Gets it! - 2009-07-30 01:05:55

It's amazing where the arguments here are going! There is obviously something wrong with an individual who would injure someone else with a car for kicks! All of this political B.S. that has been introduced here has nothing to do with this situation. This 18 year old, deranged individual is going to jail for 7 years...what the hell does that have to do Democrats and Republicans?...Democrats have destroyed the state of Maryland, run it into the ground! and Republicans have no say or control because about 3 of them live here! The people of Maryland like being treated like morons who need big brother to take care of them AND THEIR CHILDREN!! That pathetic fact has long been established. Getting back to this issue, if you use a car as a gamepiece and wind up injuring 2 innocent people, you'll wind up in jail.

Stepping in - 2009-07-29 11:41:08

Im sorry but I feel obligated to step in. I feel as if Im more or less the voice of a person of the same age group. I, a 22 yr old adult grew up with video games. Ive played violant video games from Doom, Grand theft auto, and other games that simulate other law breaking activities. When ever I see someone that blames a video game, or a movie for theyre action, I literally laugh out loud. Anyone child, or Adult that tries to place blame on a video game activity or watching something on television is just merely trying to find an easy way out. I dont care what studies may prove, because while always loving the game grand theft auto I know VERY WELL, the difference between a video game and reality. This individual and others like him just simply do not care. I believe that his punishment was fare, and that he was taught our justice system correctly. We all know that he will in no way serve the full 7yrs, BUT he will have a very troubled time moving on with his life afterwards.. From finding a job, to being excepted by peers, and the general public.

Stepping in. - 2009-07-29 11:36:58

I also feel that our justice system isnt really a great fix for people who are locked up. You take people and you cage them and often turn them into animals with the type of environment and you then release them back into the wild and expect them to change because youve caged them. These people need to be counseled, taught, and mentored throughout theyre stay to insure that they are not going to return to the state in which they came in, or have even become over the time there, but that is an entirely different subject.

I feel for Nathan Mother, and I understand here need to come in here and speak out.. I also agree that I dont see it probable that the vehicle was moving at 30mph. You have a door with an average weight of about 40-50 lbs, traveling at a speed of 30mph.. That is a TREMENDOUS amount of force per square inch. The effects would be devastating. These were either not a direct impact, or the car was clearly not traveling those speeds. The door would also be crumbled do to impact and is designed to do so. You wouldnt even be able to close it. I AM IN NO WAY DEFENDING HIS ACTION, Merely stating the obvious and facts.

Mom-
Speaking of immaturity? While I agree both people in the party should be humiliated and ashamed, You are no better then them. Society doesnt get better when everyone on the outside is pointing and throwing rocks. I can guarantee you this mother never taught her child to do anything like this, Its something that he made as a decision on his own. I have done many things in my past where my mother would NEVER condone, or stand behind. Does that make her a bad mother? Not at all! It just means that Ive decided to branch on my own.

Im a bit surprised at the general responses of everyone passing blame from video games, to immaturity. We need to just take a step back and say that this person was just generally wrong in doing what he did, he was tried, committed, and punished. The End.

clueless - 2009-07-27 12:25:05

this is Nathan's mom and i need to set a few things straight. Before all just assumes that what is posted in the newspaper is correct, maybe all needs to realize that this is a one sided story. Yes, my son did this but the information posted by the paper is VERY dramatized. He did this for no other reason than the fact that he is IMMATURE and didn't even think about the consequences of hurting those boys. He was pressured by his peers to do this and he WAS NOT doing 30 MPH. Think about it, look at cars when they are in an accident doing 30MPH? A lot of damage to both vehicles. Experts stated in court that he was doing between 8-12 mph. Had he been doing 30MPH, those kids would have been seriously injured and thank goodness they were not. Nathan is very upset and HUMILIATED by his actions and before all of you jump to conclusions about him and how he was raised, maybe you should find out more details before passing judgement. He is not a monster. Just an immature boy that did something EXTREMELY STUPID and will pay for a long long time. I just hope when he is put into prison with murderers and rapists, that it doesn't change him into a hardened person.

Here we go again. This is getting really old. The race card is an old worn out excuse. It won't work any more. Last time I checked, the president of the most powerful nation in the world was black. Seems to me that invalides all claims that blacks are opressed in this country. As Bob Dylan said, "The times they are a changin".

As the very poorly named Patriot Act has shown, those on the right side of the aisle have no loyalty or respect for the foundations this country was built upon. The only loyalty they have is in attempting to try and preserve their morally simplistic "Leave it to Beaver" society. And damn any law or freedom that gets in their way to bring that about.

The last paragraph completes as:

So those tin-pot-dictator-wannabes who want criminals to be given lesser sentences by scapegoating some other excuse (a book, music, TV show, game, etc) so they can have "ammunition" to justify banning something they don't like something and believe others MUST (as opposed to voluntarily choosing whatever path they want) also not be allowed to partake or participate can slosh off to their muck pile because they've, yet again, been caught in another lie and deceit. Follow Up to the story - 2009-07-25 10:34:10

Various sites have followed this news story, as shown just by Google.

At least one has followed up on this article/story.

The follow up brings into question this "journalist's" integrity.

The "journalist" who wrote this article clearly implied that it was the prosecutor who scapegoated a video game for the defendant's actions.

Except, that such an idea didn't, in fact, originate with the State Attorney's office. According to interviews with the Deputy State Attorney McDonald, the idea actually originated from the defendant and their attorney, as it always does. You can find the interview at ps3attitude.com dated July 24th.

Indeed, to date, no one has actually found this capability within any of the GTA games. In fact, "door checking" appears to be a brand new term, other than used in a patent for a door hinge.

In addition, Gamepolitics.com also updated their original article following the one at this site, interviewing the "journalist" on this article. Apparently, he KNEW that the idea of scapegoating video games as a defense originated with the defense, not with the State Attorney's office. He was also unaware of the capability within the game.

Finally, it should also be noted that attacking others with car doors is not, in fact, a new idea that originated with GTA. Though I have no specific citations for TV shows of the action/crime drama genre, I vaguely recall a number of them from the '70s and '80s, at the least, making use of this ability. However, an actual case of an individual attacking others with a car door can be found at http://bit.ly/WJTEm

And Google a number of different ways ("attacked with a car door", "assault with a car door", "hit with a car door", etc) produces a great many results, but this case usually appears first. Many other cases fall further into the searches.

So those tin-pot-dictator-wannabes who want criminals to be given lesser sentences by scapegoating some othe

Stupidity - 2009-07-23 15:58:29

I find it hard to believe that an 17 or 18 year old would not think of how badly injured 2 kids would be if he hit them with a car at 30 mph. And to think that his attorney trying to blame a violent game is ridiculous. There is a lot of accountability to be had and to blame someone or something else is out of line.
I played video games growing up that had fire breathing monsters. I never once tried to breathe fire.

Reaping whats been sowed - 2009-07-23 12:58:04

I'm thinking this kid assaulted the other two boys without thinking this through. I bet he didn't consider how badly hurt they would get, but just, like he said, thought it would be cool. This is just someone reenacting something he saw and portayed a hundred times in his game. I don't think you can blame the parents on this either, I know a
lot of kids, and their parents don't purchase those violent type games, but their kid will find a way to get them behind their back, or at another buddies house. Kids today are not how they used to be. They display very little, if any at all, conscious empathy for violence or wrongdoing. If everyone is looking for someone to bash, then bash the village for raising the village idiots. With all of the restrictions put on parents on disciplining their children, they are told to reason with them...barf...and they'll get locked up if they get physical at all. I watched a kid, about 12, at the mall with his parents not long ago, the boy wanted something at one of the stores, the dad said no, the kid went into a rage and slapped his mother right in her face when she told him to stop it. then the kid threatened the dad with the police if he did any thing about it. And all of the kids in that area were watching every second of this crap. The public needs to realize just where we are now. The kids have the upper hand, parents have no say, teachers have no say and God, with the biggest boot of all, is no longer involved. So reap what you sow world.

Violent Video Game Ban - 2009-07-22 16:38:40

From the moment the video game "Grand Theft Auto" came out on the market, it has been a source of violent and disturbing influence. Now you have a very young man who willingly ran down two younger boys with his car because he thought it would be fun to "door check" them as he'd seen done in the Grand Theft Auto video game. The language on this incredibly violent video game is reason enough to ban it. Allowing this rubbish in the hands of our youth is a crime in itself.
