Competitors make a splash at Waugh Chapel

More than 100 in the state competed yesterday at the Central Maryland Dive League Championships at Waugh Chapel Swim Club.

Paul W. Gillespie ­— The Capital Keegan Fahey of the Crofton Swim Club competes in the boys 11-12 division Sunday during the Central Maryland Dive League Championships at Waugh Chapel Swim Club.
The Waugh Chapel Swim Club hosted the 2009 Central Maryland Dive League Individual Championships on Sunday. Members of teams from Five Oaks Swim Club, Forest Hill Swim and Tennis Club, Frederick Area Divers, Lochearn Crossing Dive Team, North St. John's Swim Club, West Howard Swim Club, Aberdeen Dive Team, Crofton Swim and Tennis Club, Dulaney Swim Club, Padonia Park Club, St. Andrew's Swim and Tennis Club and Severn River Swim Club competed. Divers ranged in age from 7-18 and each diver needed two qualifying scores at previous meets in order to compete in the championships.

The Waugh Chapel Sea Dogs got first-place finishes from Steffany Jerman, who competed in the 9-10 girls event and Syeed Mahdi in the 13-14 boys.

Mahdi attributed his success to a strong work ethic, which helped him perfect his form on a new dive - a front half-full twist.
