Plebe Summer: Long days, hard work, new life

A little before 6 a.m. on a humid morning last week, their chants and calls could be heard outside the Naval Academy walls.

Paul W. Gillespie — The Capital Naval Academy plebes, or freshmen, in white shirts, take part in the Braveheart Run, a series of sprints, at Hospital Point on Thursday. In all, 1,230 freshmen entered the Class of 2013 on July 1, and only nine had dropped out or been dismissed as of Thursday.
Welcome to a day in the life of a plebe. These Naval Academy freshmen undergo a grueling schedule: They wake at the crack of dawn for physical education, clamber across an obstacle course, rush to morning classes, assemble for noon meal formation and set sail on the Severn. The Class of 2013 was up and about, heading off to the exercise fields to start another day of Plebe Summer.

During this day of training on Thursday, the plebes, or freshmen, started out with reveille at 5:30 a.m. and got to bed at 10 p.m. that night. In between, they would walk rope bridges high in the air on a confidence course, practice sailing 26-footers on the Severn River, and run an obstacle course on Greenbury Point.

Wow, less than 1% attrition? I guess the admissions department finally got it perfectly right this year...that's gotta be the reason, not lower standards or decreased stress on plebes or anything like that.
