Academy plebes reunite with proud parents

After finishing the bulk of their summer training, the Naval Academy Class of 2013 met yesterday with eager family members and friends for the first time in five weeks.

Joshua McKerrow — The Capital Midshipman 4th Class Matthieu Wooden, of Severna Park, is all smiles Friday as he greets his family following five weeks of the Naval Academy's Plebe Summer. 'Yes, there he is — a white hat and all teeth,' said his grandfather, Lorentho Wooden.
This weekend, August 6-9, is the Plebe Parent Weekend at the U.S. Naval Academy. On Friday, the Plebes met with family and friends for the first time since I-Day. After wading through a sea of people to find their families, the Plebes had town liberty until 10 p.m. Interviews include: Sandra Gibbs of Georgia, mother of Raymond Gibbs; Donna and Marvin Hardy of Ohio, grandparents of Joe Hardy; Scott Lutch of Massachusetts, father of Matthew Lutch; and Michele Boykin of South Carolina, mother of Joseph Boykin and aunt of Andres Mon Rimerez (from Panama). "I get the first hug!" one mother of a plebe, or freshman, told the midshipman's girlfriend. "Somebody's got to hold her back - I get the first hug!"

In keeping with tradition, the plebes had decorated "Tecumseh," the statue of an Indian warrior that sits in front of Bancroft Hall, in a whimsical theme for Plebe Parents' Weekend; this year, it was painted white and green, and made to represent Buzz Lightyear from the...
