Crowd speaks out on bay cleanup

The air conditioning in a stuffy church hall was overwhelmed by more than 300 people who packed in for a meeting last night on cleaning up the Chesapeake Bay.

More than 300 people pack a town hall meeting about the Chesapeake Bay Tuesday night at St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Annapolis. The meeting was standing-room-only, with some attendees standing in doorways and in the lobby.

But no one left.

They fanned themselves and stood in open doorways to keep cool, and for 90 minutes they talked about how leaders of the bay cleanup effort need to change course to restore the nation's largest estuary.

Thanks to everyone who came out!

I'm Tommy Landers of Environment Maryland. We organized this event along with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and others.

The tremendous showing makes it obvious how badly we want a healthy Bay. We want to see much more enforcement, and now is the best time to raise our voices.

With President Obama in office, Lisa Jackson and Chuck Fox at the EPA, and momentum building from the Executive Order, now is our best chance yet for dramatic change.
