Faced with fewer sponsors and higher costs, the festival's board of trustees and board of directors have canceled the annual festival and Highland games and are disbanding the organization.

"Basically it's the current economic conditions," said Sidney Hochstein, who serves on both boards.

"Our projected income was going to be 20 percent less than our projected costs, (and) we can't even begin to do that."

Hochstein said that a combination of fewer sponsors and a projected loss of ticket sales and...

I believe that Allan S/Festival was just offering up a suggestion. The article has stated the reason the Scottish Festival was canceled was due to finances. The suggestion to combine festivals was for financial purposes, certainly not to deminish the importance of any individuals heritage.

To "Festival" on Sept 1.
If you want to celebrate all of these multi-cultures, go to D.C. any day of the week. Why can is it so bad to celebrate what you are without having to be so darned 'politically correct'? Do people in our society not realize that by gray-washing every cultural event that we are actually loosing our heritages. Let us celebrate our history in our own unique ways, after all, that is what makes us all so special, right?

Unfortunately - 2009-09-01 14:41:53

There are several Scottish Highland Festivals in Maryland who often compete with one another for attendance (even with seperate dates). With the loss of vendors and the unwillingness of typical participants to attend multiple venues, the writing was on the wall for some of them to close shop.

I only wish we had more of above mentioned events so that we could experience at least a taste of these cultures, firsthand.

Dodds, alive and well - 2009-09-01 14:19:30

The late John Dodds....I had to laugh, I just saw him earlier today. Capital, please correct this mistake and perhaps show him the lively respect he deserves.

Festival - 2009-09-01 12:51:49

Perhaps several of these ethnic festivals could be combined to be an International Festival?

Any group that wants to and has a large enough contingency could have an area for their food, crafts, etc. Then share the stage for all day entertainment.

Scottish, Irish, African, German, Italian, Asian, Etc. all at one festival- I would go!
