"Zina Pierre has decided that for personal reasons she will withdraw from the race for mayor of Annapolis," said campaign spokesman Michael Matthews. "There will be no further comment this evening."

Earlier Friday, Pierre was beleaguered with questions about a lengthy legal record including thousands of dollars in liens and claims from the state and other creditors, information confirmed by Maryland court...

No surprise at all. I grew up in Prince Georges County, worked there for years and got out when the corruption and crime got thicker than Pea Soup. Think Paris Glendenning. The Woodmoore neighborhood where Ms. Zina is from was set up for the newly minted affluent African-Americans. 'Affluent' meaning somebody that made 30-40k but wanted a big 600k house. Said neighborhood is now a hotbed of foreclosures and rising crime as is the rest of P.G. County. Unlike the 'White flight' of the 80s and 90s where folks left to avoid the terrible crime rate, Ms. Zina seems to be running away from her bills or trying to find a way to pay them off by becoming Mayor. Just my opinion.

What was she thinking? - 2009-09-21 10:46:15

Did she think all this dirt in her closet would stay hidden? Yikes. Nobody wants their failures plastered around the public. However, it is what it is. People running for office, should expect details to come out. I don't believe she did the right thing by withdrawing from the race. The right would have been to let another more qualify candidate the opportunity to run.

Response to Foer - 2009-09-20 14:58:53

My earlier criticism of Paul Foer is related to the fact that he has a forum at both the Capital and WNAV radio. I am a citizen who relies on both of those media outlets to gain information about the qualifications of candidates who are running for public office. I expect both the newspaper and radio station to do their homework ON ALL THE CANDIDATES before a primary election occurs. I'm not interested in hearing about how I can go to some silly website to find juicy gossip about someone that is none of my business and has nothing to do with the qualifications to hold public office. The fact that Ms. Pierre has a lengthy record of mismanaging her own financial affairs and acts like a pompous ass when it comes to obeying the law should concern every citizen and it should have been discovered by a journalist who thinks his masters degree counts for something. Considering the bilge that has come out of journalism schools over the past 25 years, I'm not impressed. Even today, this ridiculous newspaper is still harping on the obvious fact that Zina Pierre is an African American! WHO CARES?..She's not qualified to be dog cather at this point! Do your job Mr. Foer or shut the hell up and get out of the way of some other individual who is qualified to be a real journalist. Cancers like you are the reason truly good people want nothing do with public service.

Besides, it appears Ms. Zina didn't even live in Annapolis or even Anne Arundel County. We can be certain of one thing, ALL the Republican candidates will be scrutinized (And for good reasons) by the media, the public and the Republican Party. We have all learned a well deserved lesson in this sordid affair. Our media needs to scrutinize ALL candidates running for any office from all political parties.

A Double Standard! - 2009-09-19 14:12:50

For the last 18 months the powers that be in the Democratic Party have been trying to get Zina Pierre out of the Mayors race. They told her noone knew her, they told her she had no chance of winning (SHE WON), they even offered to retire their ole reliable, Alderwoman Classie Hoyle and give that seat to Zina.

Zina stayed strong and focused through it all, she persivered, the voters spoke and SHE WON.

WHAT HAPPENED? Zina's past financial troubles were revelaed and this was the opportunity Mike Busch, Ellen Moyer, and the ADCC had been waiting for; we can get her out!

Shropshire vs Pierre --> What is the difference. Sitting Democrat Alderman Sam Shropshire has a very lengthy trail of legal and financial issues. His wages from his City pay check are being GARNISHED by seceral creditors. Last but certainly not least he is currently facing charges in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court for sexually assaulting a Midshipman who he was entrusted as a Sponsor for. Moyer, Hoyle, and the ADCC have all stated publically their support for Shropshire in his most recent criminal matter and noone has ever once asked him to resign.

So, what is the difference between Alderman Sam and Zina; Clear and Simple, Mike Busch, Ellen Moyer, Chuck Weikel and Josh Cohen raised over $30,000 in 2005 and put every waking moment into getting Shropshire elected. He was the new hero, they pulled off the perfect storm.

They are trying for a repeat 4 years later. Our annointed candidate lost to you, so now that we all know you have had some financial difficulties in the past, step aside and supported the annointed one (Josh Cohen).

Who has not had financial difficulties, hell, home foreclosures are at an all time high. The difference here is that Zina won the impossible and they can't handle the truth.

FIGHT ZINA FIGHT and do not let the MACHINE PUSH YOU OUT. The voters made you the Democratic Nominee; not Mike Busch and Company.

I meant Foer and not Foes (typo and no way to edit).

The "wishes" of the voters is difficult to determine beyond the fact that they wished Zina would run. The right thing to do is to have a quick runoff election, but time will not permit that. And according to the City Code, the decision lies solely within the 9 members (I think that's how many there are) of the ADCC.

Conspiracy / timing - 2009-09-19 12:34:57

I believe that Cohen is in collusion With Foer. Cohen wanting to hide his own deeply hidden ( so he thinks) secrets wanted to avoid confronting anyone directly and maintain the appearence of 'nice guy'. He was also certain he would win--especially with all those white supporters--as well as out of state developer money,But then he lost and sent out an old friend and member of his tribe Foer to do some 'after the horse got out' investigative reporting. If paul is such a damn good reporter, why did he not find this out sooner.

Driving without a license means exactly what it states - she didn't have her license on her when she was stopped on that occasion. Tell me you've never left your purse or wallet at home accidentially and driven somewhere? As for her car - a good deal of people on the road don't have their car paid for.

No I always carry my license. Apparently Ms. Zina does not even HAVE a license. It was suspended 13 YEARS ago! And no I've never been sued for not paying my car note or anything else. Ms. Zina seems to have a pattern of not paying he bills including Foreclosure, Hechts, Jaguar/Range Rover, State Taxes....you getting the idea yet? The B'more Sun has quite an expose'. I suggest you check it out before calling ME out.

ADCC Selection - 2009-09-19 09:53:18

I am not so sure that automatically picking Josh or any of the other candidates is the right move here. If they do select Josh, he will have to overcome this stigma.
And I am not sure the logic that Josh was the #2 guy is good logic. Remember there are more voters that wanted someone else. What would have happened if Barack Obama had a similar issue? Would McCain have automatically been selected as President?

What makes you think Josh would have been elected if Ziena was not in the race? To say that the Democratic Party has to do the right thing and pick Josh is wrong. We are so far away from the general election maybe we should have another Election to see who of the remaining candidits would have won. Remember Josh Cohen had over 2000 votes cast against him. Thats 2 thirds of the people that voted last tuesday. Now we need to do the right thing and have a fair election and keep the moyers and the Capital out of it. And yes i am a democrat.

Sorry, T. Jackson. Driving without a license means that she had NO VALID driver's license when she was caught driving. It does not mean that she forgot it at home. That would be FAILURE TO DISPLAY a license. You have it wrong.

It is laughable that this newspaper's biggest hack, Eric Hartley, wrote a glowing piece about Ms. Pierre and the "change" that is coming to Annapolis. Apparently, he couldn't be bothered to do a little bit of investigative homework on Ms. Pierre by doing a simple case search on the internet. Change indeed. It seems that Ms. Pierre was exactly the same as every other democrat in this state and country.

Conspiracy, Conschmiracy - 2009-09-19 07:21:23

There are multiple failings here: the media (traditional or bloggers) failed to vet the candidates, Zina Pierre failed her supporters with her naivete that this history would not be an issue, and you could argue that the "political machine" didn't find this by trying to stay away from negative campaigning (arguably a GOOD thing), but a conspiracy? Come on. As I said below, the Democratic Party needs to now do the right thing; follow the voters will in an open and transparent way - the vote tally is unambiguous - and work the city out of this mess as gracefully as possible.

Democratic Machine Wins! - 2009-09-19 06:44:48

The timing of this news is more than curious, it is carefully calculated.

Mick Busch, Ellen Moyer, and the Democratic machine could not get their fair haired boy Josh Cohen elected in the Primary, so they have to force out the Candidate who won fair and square. This just opens the door for the Annapolis Democratic Central Committee {ADCC} to appoint Cohen or another machine annointed puppet.

Shame on them! Hell, half of all Americans are having financial issues these days, has anyone been watching the historical number of foreclosures occuring in Maryland and the rest of the Country.

Isn't it suspicious that Alderman Shropshire, also a Mayoral Candidate for over a year was charged with sexually assaulting a USNA Midshipman and has been supported and embraced by Moyer, Busch, and the local ADCC.

Isn't that more concerning than Zina's personal finances. Oh, I forgot, Sam is a friend of Busch, Cohen and Moyer; they got him elected this same way in 2005.

Shame on you Democrats; I am embarrased to be affiliated with your party.

no harm, no foul - 2009-09-19 01:06:32

So maybe the Capital et. al. should have picked up on this sooner. But isn't it really a case of no harm no foul? It came to light before the general election. So we have avoided the disaster of having a mayor who can't balance a checkbook.

It's impossible to know who would have won if Zina had not run.

We need to know more about the people on the committee and what their process will be for selecting a candidate.

Media Incompetence! - 2009-09-19 00:28:43

What's surfaced here is the incompetence of local media! These sorry "Activists" at The Capital and a certain RIDICULOUS local radio station, with an alleged full time news department that rivals the sitcom WKRP didn't bother to check on anything except the color of the woman's skin and how she was "Making History"...And now these same media outlets are trying to make it seem like Paul Foer, The Perez Hilton of Annapolis, somehow covered this. Since when do gossip hounds qualify as Journalists? Instead of questioning the whereabouts of Dave Cordle on election night, Miss Foer should have been questioning the legitimate backgrounds of EVERY candidate who wants to run the city, not just the ones he wanted to see loose! Shame on the Capital and every other media outlet in the city. You should be embarrased.

Epic Fail - 2009-09-19 00:10:43

Wow. In light of the Clinton endorsement, I give this 12 hours before it is picked up by the drudge report.

Do the right thing - 2009-09-18 23:21:11

The circumstances around Zina Pierre's withdrawal are unfortunate, but I think she has done the right thing to get out of the race. These issues would have dogged her to the end. Now, the Democratic Party has to do the right thing and pick Josh Cohen to be the nominee - that is the will of the voters. Please honor that.

why - 2009-09-18 23:11:47

would people not check this out before elections, I go look at this everytime I hire someone. This is a simple web search. If I am doing business with someone I check the company as well as the person. If someone is working in my home I want to make sure they are not sex offenders been arrested for theft etc.. Has their company been sued etc...

Shame - 2009-09-18 22:28:11

This is a shame and I almost have to side with Cordle or Fox about it being more dirty politics than anything.
Now, the ADCC has literally Carte Blanche to appoint anyone they choose to run for Mayor despite the wishes and desires of the 3700 voters who cast their vote on Tuesday.
Who will it be? Ellen Moyer? Chuck Weikel? Josh COhen? Trudy McFall? Wayne Taylor? Laurie Sears Deppa? Sam Shropshire? Sheila Finlayson? Gilbert Renaut? Maybe even Paul Foer?
Well, I guess they can stop complaining about a body deciding an election in 2000 now.

Misleading Race - 2009-09-18 22:10:15

Dismayed with the political process again. Is there anyone out there who has the moral and ethical character to be elected by the people? And why did it take so long for this information to surface? I am stunned.
