New board members add youth, diversity

Like Benjamin Button, the county school board is getting younger: The two newest members are both about 20 years younger than the people they replaced.

And like the county school system, the board is also becoming more diverse: For the first time, there are more African-American and Hispanic members than white ones.

"In terms of ethnic and racial diversity, this is the most diverse board we've ever had," said Tyson Bennett, the board's attorney since 1983. "This is extraordinary. It's the first majority minority board we've ever had."

In a majority white county...why do we have more minorities on the School Board. What a politically correct joke. We need elected school boards to represent the community they supposedly serve.
