Market House renovations to begin this winter

Capital Gazette Communications
Published 10/07/09

Market House is scheduled to close for yet another major renovation this winter, and when it reopens, a new mayor will be in office and a new plan for the downtown Annapolis landmark will be in place, possibly putting it in the best shape since Tropical Storm Isabel flooded downtown in 2003.

But what will become of Market House will be determined in the next few months after voters elect a new mayor Nov. 3.

A new air-conditioning system is going to be installed this winter, replacing the inadequate one that has been at the center of the slew of legal problems recently plaguing the building. But that work can't begin until...

Heres a Novel Idea - 2009-10-12 06:55:00

Somebody contact Ray Lowman (one of the sons of Rookies Meat Market) and have him re-open Rookies in the Market House.

Then Annapolis would be the once great town it was again.

I think he's an architect. I also think he drinks while blogging:

"Yo, Dave be smart ~ Send me your plans !!! -- You're a cop and what do you know about market structures and their operations, maintenance, merchandizing, tenant mix and marketing - you guys just like to eat powdered donuts, drink bad 7-11 coffee and sit in the car right ? -- jeesh..."

WOW. What has this guy done with his life, right? Cordle serves his country, Purcell serves biting commentary -- or it would be biting if it were written 30 years ago.

Annapolis Seafood/Czech Junket - 2009-10-09 17:58:09

Unconscionable for the Capitol NOT to have an in depth story on the Czech junket. Market House with a little luck, and the effort of concerned citizens and courageous present vendors will survive the status quo.NO tax dollars for the Czech junket. Get Real.People are fed up, and waking up.

Annapolis Seafood - 2009-10-09 17:02:55

If memory serves, Annapolis Seafood tried to assume the lease offered to Dean & Deluca. It sounded fishy, as I recall, because they didn't bid originally. Aldermen started asking too many questions, Site threatned to sue, and Annapolis Seafood walked away.

Can't swear to it, but it was something like that. Too bad. They would have done a class act.

Annapolis Seafood - 2009-10-09 14:43:35

I'm having a little memory spurt. Didn't Annapolis Seafood consider putting in a bid to run the market house before Site Reality got it and after the first deal fell through? Maybe Nick, of the Capital, could chime in. I'm sure what I am remembering whas in the Capital.

Annapolis Seafood - 2009-10-09 13:03:53

My wife and I have always thought that Annapolis Seafood would make he perfect tenant. It would presumably not have the heat generating issues, is a local business, promotes a maritime atmosphere and fills a niche (fresh seafood) that, as far as I know, is lacking downtown. It would appeal to locals and tourists alike. Does anyone on here know whether it has ever been approached about Market House and, if so, what the problem was?

If she was driving an SUV her financial planner will surely steer her toward a more cost effective mode of transportation in light of her financial problems. And as far as going to catholic school, is she did so in Annapolis, since she is Black, it would actually improve her skills as a neutral analytical mind.

Market House - 2009-10-08 13:19:05

No, Jennifer, it is not brain surgery, but the current administration has proved inept at basic property management.

During several campaign interviews, Chris Fox pointed out some very basic mistakes made with managing the Market House that anyone familiar with running a restaurant would have easily understood. When you place a pizza vendor next to a flower vendor next to a fudge vendor, etc., OF COURSE you're going to have HVAC problems. It can't keep up with regulating the airspace when each stall has a completely different temperature than the one next to it. Simply putting all the "hot" vendors on one side and the "cold" vendors on the other side (which Fox has proposed) would have alleviated the stress on the HVAC system, which is what started the whole dispute.

No this is not brain surgery. It's basic common sense...the kind which Moyer, Cohen, and Cordle clearly don't have.

Just like health care reform. Anytime you let local, state or federal government run something. Its never run correctly. Even around the world they are starting to learn this. They call it privatization.

Not now! - 2009-10-08 12:16:17

I agree with John F and Jen. Don't let the current administration fiddle with the Market House any more. It has been one failure after another, with the current model at least keeping it open.

Let the new mayor and council work out a plan. Don't let the Moyer hacks wreak any more havoc on the MH. Just go away, quietly, please, and let some professionals clean up the mess.

Zina Pierre should be put in charge of the market house revitalization. We need her insight to bring Blacks back into the Market House and diversify this otherwise sharply segregated uptight, catholic school bred, SUV driving town.

property management - 2009-10-07 21:57:33

There is absolutely no reason why the City can't provide property management of the Market House. The whole 'master lease' idea with Site Realty was a disaster. The City certainly has the ability to manage the Market House. It is not brain surgery. Public-Private solutions are nothing more than graft. Property Management is straightforward. The City needs a good lawyer to write up strong contracts - again, not difficult.

slash and burn - 2009-10-07 17:31:41

Moyer, like Bush in his last 4 years, has come to accept the fact that she will never make a real difference , that she has left things worse than they were when they were handed to her. Tht being said, she now has nothing to do and will exploit the office for her own satisfaction and childish desires. Bush/Moyer NO MORE YEARS !!!! But Cohen ain't no Obama and Obama needs to turn it up a couple notches. Anapolis, needs a real player, not one of these local hicks claiming to have roots in annapolis.

Moyer fatigue - 2009-10-07 17:28:28

Could it be the Capital (and many of their readers) are just tired of hearing about all the Moyer antics and wasteful spending? It seems to roll right past them. The Czech junket raised nary an eyebrow. They are probably immune to these indignities.

Maybe she gets a free pass and "all you can spend" for the next nine weeks.

Moyer Waste - 2009-10-07 16:51:06

Yes she really needs to be reigned in. The Capital (to my knowledge) has also not covered the current trip for 5 city employees/aldermen to be present for a chance win an award in the Czech Republic. While the PIO says the money comes from operating budgets, why are we paying to go for a CHANCE to get an award, and furthermore, why are we sending FIVE people? Didn't she just feel the heat for spending money on the French teens?

John's SO RIGHT - 2009-10-07 13:07:31

I absolutely agree with you. Moyer never quits screwing things up. Annapolitan's (and County residents) need to call the mayors office and demand, plead or beg if necessary, that no work or changes be done on or to the market house under this administration. Also, the three candidates should be making those calls. We need to step in and say this in enough, knock it off! I am having a very hard time understanding why Moyer would lock the city into new contracts with who-ever for whatever reason in regard to the market house.

Why - 2009-10-07 12:14:09

Is construction commencing under the regime of the current administration when there are three completely different "plans" by the candidates who are vying for Mayor?

Why not allow the temporary vendors to remain and allow the new administration (who will need to live with this "gorilla") guide the direction.

I have heard discussion that the geothermal heat that is proposed is a very poor solution. What then?
