Joshua McKerrow — The Capital TOP: Owner Bert Kappel and General Manager Loveta Wilen have announced that Paul’s on the South River will be closing in December. BOTTOM: Over the years, customers and staff have become like family at Paul’s on the South River. Here, long-time customers Katie and Len Stascavage, seated, who have had dinner at the Riva restaurant every Saturday for 22 years, share a light moment with staff. From left, General Manager Loveta Wilen, Assistant General Manager Kathy Lavelle, Kitchen Manager Paul Mosser, Assistant Manager Tiffany Caloway, Executive Chef Stephanie Kleso and owner Bert Kappel.

Thanks for the memories.

That's the primary sentiment being expressed at the recent news that Paul's on the South River will close the day after Christmas.

Those memories will now have to live on in hundreds of family photo albums marking thousands of special occasions celebrated at the venerable restaurant in Riva, which opened its doors in 1945.

"It's like the passing of a very dear friend," said Katie Stascavage, who has dined at Paul's every Saturday night with her husband, Len, for the past 22 years. "The place is beyond compare. We are just very saddened by it."

Worked there for years while i was in school. A group of very nice people who own and run the place. Food is awsome. I hate to see them go.Best of luck to all involved.

Paul's - 2009-10-20 12:41:47

It's sad to see the local places losing out to the chains. It makes Annapolis feel less like a unique community and more like Anywhere, USA.

Frog Legs - 2009-10-19 18:42:28

Many years ago my brothers would 'gig' Bullfrogs in Mitchellville and we'd all take a bike ride down Governor Bridge Rd. with sacks of iced frog legs to sell at Paul's for 45 Cents a pound. Back then the roads were quite rural and everybody had dogs. My job was to protect the riders from the chasing and biting dogs with a squirt gun loaded with TABASCO sauce.
The folks at Paul's would always give us a cheese sandwich, (Which we dusted with Old Bay) and a glass of icewater with every delivery.
Years later I always brought folks to Paul's for dinner by boat for a special treat. Remember the stuffed Rockfish? It was so good!
It's so sad to see Paul's closing. My very best regards to the staff throughout the years. You folks will be sorely missed and I'm certain the community wishes all of you the very best future.

The Cake - 2009-10-19 15:50:37

I went to a reception there once and the most memorable part was watching the lady slice through that cake at warp speed.

So Sad - 2009-10-18 21:02:07

I am so sad to hear that Paul's is closing. My husband and I had our beautiful reception there 3 years ago and had the best time with everyone. Loveta and her staff are AMAZING and everyone raved about her and how awesome it all was and how neat it was to see someone cut a cake so fast. She helped us save so much money in so many areas we had no idea. She is an awesome lady and we will miss Paul's. We will for sure make one last trip to have dinner very soon.

Paul's on the South River Closing - 2009-10-18 20:54:53

I'm sorry to hear that Paul's is closing. My husband and I had our wedding reception there almost 7 years ago and loved the place.

Loveta especially impressed us--watching her cut our wedding cake (in under 3 minutes) was amazing.
