'Meet the Authors' event tomorrow helps assist needy St. John's students

If you need a good reason to turn off the football game and attend the annual "Meet the Authors" book signing and reception at St. John's College tomorrow afternoon, just think about Brooke Meyer.

Earl Kelly — The Capital Brooke Meyer, a senior at St. John's College, is one of the students who received emergency financial assistance this year through the college's Caritas Society. The society is hosting its annual 'Meet the Authors' event Sunday to raise money for students like Meyer. Participating authors are novelist Alice McDermott, PBS journalist Gwen Ifill, and historian Craig Symonds.

The event, which will feature novelist Alice McDermott, retired Naval Academy historian Craig Symonds and PBS journalist Gwen Ifill, is a fundraiser to help St. John's Caritas Society, which in turn helps students who encounter financial emergencies. Meyer was one of those students.

Why does it cost so much? The Capital does not go into this, but I believe that in 2000 in was "only" $25,000.00/ year. From what I gather, this is just another over-inflated, artificially high sector of the economy. Maybe when unemployment gets to 13% SJC will contract and correct to a more (philosophically) real number.
