Security tightened for NAACP banquet

Capital Gazette Communications
Published 11/17/09

Security will be heightened at the county NAACP's annual awards banquet Friday night because of "strongly-worded" e-mails objecting to the controversial keynote speaker, the group's president said yesterday.

Find Us On Facebook

Jacqueline Allsup said none of the e-mails threatened the group or the Rev. Dr. Jerimiah Wright, but instead advised the group that "it would be in your best interest not to do this."

"The e-mails that we have received were enough for us to be concerned" said Allsup, who declined to release any of them.

After Wright was named last month as the guest speaker at the Freedom Fund...

divine right politics/fighting with - 2009-11-22 17:05:03

Divine right leadership has taken control of politics over the last few presidential tenures. Clinton was the first to pray in office, and ever since then leadership and faith have gone hand in hand. A politician need to claim guidence from God, because our presidents represent us to religious states around the world. Race, finance and war are all very good at uniting people, but none as well as religion, and religion encompasses them all. A religiously prepared people will accept divine leadership for what it is and be able to handle these issues and more, which is especially important when we are experiencing religious anymosity from fundumentalist nations, who arent afraid to use our own devisive issues to achieve their religious goals. We must accept common terms, and must search God to find those terms to define us, while accepting our roles, even if we didn't choose them. It is certain, we must accept the divine right now thrust on our leaders, even as they must lead us through wars that bridge a divide of race, religion, and socio-economic differences.

Race Baiting - 2009-11-21 17:20:07

OK JJ you wanted me to comment on this article. First of all, the event planners had to hire more security than normal for the Rev. Wright because a couple of white yahoos probably made a death threat or two. Second, none of the local Republican politicians showed up to the NAACP event. Why? Could it be that some of their supporters hold racist views? I don't know. Third, the Rev Wright seemed to recognize that we have a lot of differences to work through as a country. Wow, a positive message. Look, the left has some rabble rousers but nothing compared to the talk radio and Fox news hate inciters on the right. These guys do nothing but stir the ideological and racial pot. I pity you if these are people you actually look up to and respect. Calmer voices should prevail.

How is it that you cannot comment on this story - emphasis on THIS story without bringing up other parties not mentioned in this story? It doesn't matter what anyone else does, nor has done...this article is about the Rev Wright and necessary security, and you've single-handedly turned this into a race issue, and a political issue. You've also taken away any value (in my mind) you may have had as an intelligent poster. Tough break, another race-baiter to place on ignore.

Racism - 2009-11-21 10:59:01

Neil, unfortunately ethnic hatreds have been a catalyst for countless conflicts throughout human history. Take a look at the present days wars around the world. Most tend to be between peoples of different ethnic groups, However, most modern nation states have developed strategies that aim to develop national identities that supersede ethnicity. However, when that national identity breaks down (think Yugoslavia after Tito), tribal or ethnic identities once again become the primary affiliation for people. We still have some work to do here in the US. The basic problem here is that ethnic/racial divides fractured along socio-economic lines so that you do not have the same middle-class representation among blacks and Latinos that you see with the dominant white culture.

Racists aren't all white - 2009-11-20 19:21:22

I am sure you are not racist, and so I am sure you would agree that, just as there are white racists, there are black racists.

Would you agree that nothing good could come of angry, ignorant, racist, black people trying to take political power?

As an abstract proposition.

wow - 2009-11-20 15:52:53

its amazing to see so many people can be outwardly racist when you cant see their faces...this has turned from a platform about peoples opinion of a person to a black and white issue. I feel that peoples opinions are their own, and you have the right to express it. But lets be real. how many of you here even believe that a black person can say anything on their minds and it makes sense..how many of you clutch your purses or lock your car doors when you see a black person walking up?? It just proves that you all still want a color line to be drawn in this forum. This is crazy to compare this man to a KKK member. i wonder how many of you have cute little white robes hiding in your closets.....

Not Quite Mikey. I get that opinion based on the fact that liberals are rewriting the constitution, but that's another debate. Bottom line is, Wright a racist hate breeder and has no place stirring up the pot instead of moving on. Like Dave D. said, the 1960's are over.

I think we get the point...you've mentioned Limbaugh, Hannity, Levin, Savage, etc. enough times now. Personally, as a republican, I don't watch Fox. But I can tell you this; anyone that believes the government is behind drug abuse "bringing the black man down" should check into a clinic. And by the way, you can stop referring to republicans as "sheep". Obama is the sheep herder and the liberals like you are the sheep. Anyone that can ignore the fact that Obama fought a court order to prove his US citizenship, has ties with outspoken terrorists (Bill Ayres), and only won the election because of huge masses of money that no one can explain where it came from (a question that Obama carefully avoids)...anyone that supports a candidate because he can give a good speech with a painted on smile with absolutely no qualifications or experience, anyone that follows such a man without question, is undoubetly a sheep if anyone is, sir.

Laziness - 2009-11-20 12:31:34

The point is that only the most supposedly inflammatory comments Wright made were publicized. Many people, especially conservatives, are not interested in seeing what this guy said on a daily basis. Only the most negative crap is emphasized. I personally do not find Wright's comments nearly as negative as the hateful bilge spewed forth daily by the likes of Limbaugh, Hannity, Levin, Savage, etc. that conservatives would like us to believe are part of mainstream America.

Wright's words are his Own - 2009-11-19 21:16:49

First, I think Stanley meant that he did not Personally know anybody associated with a "color based" group.

Second, assuming that Wright has a positive message that was basically obscured by some negative comments he made, you need to stop blaming the news for reporting that. The words are Wright's words, and it is up to him to explain them.

It would also be good to acknowledge that Wright's critics have a legitimate point, instead of calling them demented, right wing "sheep". Because, you know, that can cut both ways.

Dave, I am not a devotee of Rev. Wright, but I think I understand where he was coming from. His message was not race-based as many in the right-wing community think. He spoke to prejudice, bigotry, and injustice and the negative emotional states that lead people, especially those in power, to realities that are injust. Like I said, if you focus on the stupid little snippets from your favorite channel, the Faux News channel you will come to a different conclusion. The sheep on the right need to stop being programmed by the likes of Limbaugh and Hannity. They are hazardous to your mental health.

Crime in the City - 2009-11-19 16:50:37

Take a good look at our Annapolis police report and see where the crime is committed and who is committing crimes. Yesterday we had a murder in the City, the Capital Newspaper put it on page 7 I believe (in small print). It would be much better to have speaker come to the Annual Award dinner and talk to young black people about their lives here than to speak about hating this country. And Fox didn't spin this, Rev. Wright used his own words on the film that I saw. He is a hateful man and a terrible pastor. And I believe he became a rich man living in this country and spewing his hate. I wonder if he would own a multi million dollar home if he preached this hateful stuf in Somalia.

are you serious Stanley?? - 2009-11-19 16:10:35

....i know of no white person belonging to a color based group...??? Have you Stanley, ever heard of the KU KLX KLAN a color based group that is KNOWN for terrorizing other color based groups not the same as them. Historically, Gangs of Other ethnicities were started because of fear of Caucasian COLOR BASED groups who would go to their neighborhoods and terrorize the Afro americans, latinos, and asian minorities who lived there. I cant believe and refuse to accept that statement as logical or a basis to explain how you feel about Rev. Wright and his politics... further more sir, i think that is an outright RACIST statement about black people being sensitive about their color. We wouldnt have to be sensitive about our color if color based groups like the aforementioned KLAN, Aryan Nation, Hell's Angels, and skinheads werent trying to kill, harm, or eliminate our color. And to use Rodney King as an example for Black people is very outdated...if you dont agree with the rev's politics or views, then comment on that solitary person's statements and don't generalize all Black people to make an underhanded racist statement. P.S. i Belong to the SENSITIVE color group you were speaking of..

Wright - 2009-11-19 15:56:03

I wonder how the public would have reacted if an organization that defended the rights of whites (which will never exist) invited a controversial speaker that spewed hate toward blacks at an awards banquet? White or black based, any radical with Wright's record of hate and controversial political position is unacceptable and nothing but fuel for racism. As I've stated so many times before, the fact that we have a black president disproves the argument of black opression in this country. Everyone has the same opportunities if they choose to persue them. The 1960's are in the past.

Stephen Martin, you are wrong. Forget what Fox has to say about him. Do a little reading about this man. There is nothing in his message that has anything to do with "peace, love and understanding". Your narrow minded opinion is questionable at best.

Wright or wrong - 2009-11-19 13:54:14

I have read a number of this man's sermons, unabridged, spanning a number of years. His tone is often angry, his remarks frequently inflammatory, and his message always contains some element of truth. It is often the case that the truth of a message is lost and the good it can do is diminished when the truth is overshadowed by hate-filled diatribes, racially-biased generalizations, or personal opinion given as fact, and that happens whether the speaker is white, black, or aubergine with splashes of violet. Curious, I polled a number of my friends who are black, and therefore have a more personal perspective in this matter, and every one of them said that they were disappointed in the choice of speaker. Everyone said there are so many men and women who have contributed in a meaningful way to the betterment of the black community or are simply great at what they do, that they could not understand what Rev. Wright had to offer. As one woman said "There are plenty of angry preachers, angry black preachers, right around here. Why did they have to bring one from Chicago? What does he have to do with me?" The saddest part is his presence is overshadowing Mr. Ealim and his work, which has actually benefited both the community and business. Kudos to you, sir!

Rev. Wright - 2009-11-19 12:02:29

We can say what we want about Rev Wright. The bottom line is: some of the things he says aren't "politically correct", but he does make sense sometimes. The things about drugs to oppress black people i dont completely agree with..but if anyone has ever heard of "Freeway" Ricky Ross, he has always maintained that he was in cahoots with a government official who was using profits from drug money to fund guerilla tatics that coincidentally came from the area he lived in, South Central Los Angeles. Why is it that we can let certain politicians and TV celebs(who are usually white) say what they want with no impunity and call it "free speech", but when a Black politician or member of the spiritual community says something along the same line we get SOOOOOO offended. Some of you have valid points, but im sure that some of you who want to villify Rev Wright will gladly sit and listen to Don Imus or Rush Limbaugh...two people we KNOW have made racist statements in a way more public forum than the reverend...If we are offended be offended across the board.

Rev. Wright Sermon - 2009-11-19 11:16:58

Neil. The right-wingers and especially Fox News completely twisted who Wright was as a person. Was or is he angry about injustice in this country and the world at large? Yes, and he expressed it quite well. Unfortunately, all you got from the media were snippets that I believe were taken out of context thanks to the rabid weasels on the right who were pulling out all the stops to defeat Obama in the last election. I suggest you read Wright's 9/11 sermon in its entirety. A simple internet search will get you there.

The Faux News junkies think they know exactly who the Rev. Wright is. Most of the comments the Faux News Network showed over and over and over again. How do you know that his overall message from the pulpit was not one of peace, love, and understanding? The wingnuts in our country completely focused on Wright's more controversial comments. Sorry, but the right-wing crazies in our country are the kings of inflammatory rhetoric. The Rev. Wright's comments are not nearly as hateful as the likes of Hannity, Limbaugh, Savage and their lunatic-fringe ilk.

Rev. Wright as Speaker - 2009-11-18 09:41:56

Why would any group invite this Rev. Wright as a speaker? This man uses religion and his profession as a Pastor and "man of God" as he claims to steer up hate in this country. I never ever heard a more hateful speaker than this man. So why was he invited? There must be a reason. Just think the outrage for a good reason - if the AA Co. Business Association would invite a speaker from the KKK, I wonder if they would get extra protection? Bringing more hate is not what we need right now.

I may not agree with what Rev.Wright has to say or with the NAACP inviting him to AACO,but its a free country. As for the drugs in the inner city there are drugs everywhere and it doesnt matter what your status in society is. No one is making anyone use drugs.
