Alleged drunken driver crashes into 5 cars

Capital Gazette Communications
Published 11/18/09

A woman motorist played "bumper cars" through downtown Annapolis early Saturday morning after pulling out of Market Space and hitting a parking meter, city police said.

Find Us On Facebook

City police officers had just finished attending to a disturbance near City Dock around 2:05 a.m. when they saw three women get into a pickup truck. The driver tried to pull out of the space but couldn't. The driver then reversed out of the space at a high speed, almost hit a police car and hit the parking meter, police said.

Officers approached the truck but it sped off, failing to stop for the stop sign as it turned onto Main Street.

The truck passed several vehicles on the left going up Main Street and attempting to turn left onto Gorman Street.

It then jumped the curb near Ben and Jerry's and rode on the sidewalk, sideswiping a light pole and nearly hitting the building, police said. The Ford F-150 turned onto Gorman with an officer in pursuit.

When the driver tried to turn onto Conduit from Gorman, she hit a parked Mazda, driving it into the curb and into a parking meter, damaging both sides of the car.

The driver kept going, crossed Duke of Gloucester Street and then sideswiped a BMW, police said.

It kept speeding down Conduit Street and swerved hitting three more cars, severely damaging a Honda, hitting a Toyota Yaris so hard it was pushed completely up on the sidewalk and then rear-ended a Hyundai.

The driver attempted to put the truck in reverse but it was inoperable, police said.

At that point police arrested the driver, Ashley Lashaun Boston, 21, of Edelmar Drive in Annapolis.

At the police station she was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, five counts of hit and run for the vehicles, one count of hit and run for the parking meter and negligent driving.

Boston was being held on $100,000 bond.

Neither Boston nor her two passengers were injured.

Mr. Chubby - 2009-11-21 01:04:29

You've got two options here: sending this dumb a** to jail or you and/or someone else being hit by this dumb a** when she gets off! I would rather see her go to jail. You know she's going to end up doing this again considering her track record with the system. Given the chance, NEXT time she could end up hurting or killing someone. That's not something to take lightly or put an amount of money on. Putting her in jail is one less drunk driver off the road. I'd say that's a darn good alternative than keeping her out of jail, allowing her to do something like this again. You might want to rethink your comment!

One more thing - 2009-11-19 21:42:15

I love The Capital's headline: "Alleged Drunken Driver Crashes into 5 cars".

Or the comments that (correctly) zero in on the fact that we don't know whether she was actually drinking at a bar downtown that night!

This is like Shep Smith reporting (as he did tonight), "The alleged shooter at Ft. Hood..."

Ahhh, I am pretty confident that she WAS wasted, she DID come out of an Annapolis bar, etc.

Do such people think they're being careful or accurate or are they just stupid?

I hope we can all temper our sanctimonious outrage a little bit with the knowledge that people like this are OUR ECONOMY AND TAX BASE. No-one was hurty, and it was probably the high point of that cop's night. Plus, Miatas suck and that guy with the Beemer probably had it coming.

PS Ashley I still love you honey!

an infraction? - 2009-11-19 14:14:11

Fred, I'd hardly call beating a man with a crowbar about the head and shoulders until he was unconscious an "infraction." From your posts, I'm not sure you want to pay for anything. Would you rather the young lady come visit your house, your family, or your car? Maybe if we really start locking people away, it will discourage others from committing crimes. Maybe not, but it certainly isn't working the way we are doing things now.

jail - 2009-11-19 13:20:16

My friends, you might want to lock everyone up, all the time, for any infraction but that costs money and would require that more jails /prisons be built in someone's backyard. I neither want to pay for housing a convicted person nor a jail.

Her past - 2009-11-19 13:16:12

I just googled this young lady's name and saw the previous charge from two years ago. Oh my gosh! She was charged with beating a man with a crowbar about the head and shoulders until he was unconscious. I wonder what happened with that case. If she was convicted, what on earth is she doing out two years later to be able to drunk drive? So, I think most of the responsibility is hers, but I have to blame the judge a bit who has let her out to commit additional crimes. I guess we will let her keep going until she actually kills someone. Then again, even if she does finally finish someone off, we'll probably let her out again.

Lost cause - 2009-11-19 12:45:42

This girl definitely seems like a lost cause. I blame no one but HER! It was her who made the choice to get behind the wheel while being intoxicated. You cant blame the bartenders for this! Their job is to serve, not babysit. I know the places downtown and Ive seen first-hand bartenders cut off patrons who are obviously intoxicated but they cant catch everyone. People need to start taking responsibility for their actions and stop trying to blame everyone else. I believe in second chances, but NOT thirds and fourths and fifths. If you cant make it right by the second time then theres obviously nothing that is going to help you. This girl had her second chance five chances ago and shouldnt have been allowed out to do this.

Woman arrested in attack on man

An Odenton teenager was arrested early yesterday after eggs were thrown at a man and he was beaten with a crowbar, Annapolis police said.

The victim, a 22-year-old Fleet Street resident, said he was sitting in his car on Newtowne Drive at 1:30 a.m. Saturday when a woman drove by and threw several eggs at his car. He confronted her in a parking lot on nearby Madison Street and she got out of the car with the crowbar and struck him repeatedly on the head, neck and shoulders until he lost consciousness, police said.

Ashley Lashaun Boston was arrested and charged yesterday with first-degree assault and related offenses. She is being held at the Jennifer Road Detention Center in lieu of $500,000 bail.

Bartenders? - 2009-11-18 17:13:14

Do you go out drinking at the bars in Annapolis? On a weekend night the crowd to get to the bar is usually three people deep. How is a bartender supposed to determine if a person standing up straight, leaning on others to get closer, and screaming an order over the crowd noise and music is drunk? If they are staggering or visually drunk, I have watched tons of servers deny service, but other than that...there is a thing called personal responsibility. Why not blame her alcoholic father? Or the beer company? The liquor distiller? I mean you could blame the city and the police for NOT doing a good enough job in promoting the free cab service from downtown. When was the last time you saw one of those stickers or flyers prominently placed? Exactly...but all that is moot, so I digress...personal responsibility.

bartenders - 2009-11-18 16:32:05

While the story does not state that these women came from a bar, the fact is irrelevant even if they had been at one. If anyone has been to any of the bars downtown on a Friday night, you would know how ridiculously crowded they get. No bartender who is doing their job would be able to take more than a split second to glance at someone ordering a beverage or paying their tab... they are way too busy! If someone should have noticed these girls it should have been the bouncer standing at the door. In any case, I hope these girls (all of them) learn their lesson and get the help they need.

How much for last call? - 2009-11-18 15:39:30

Meters, poles and a BMW, all can be repaired. Thankfully, no one was injured. This doesn't sound like a couple glasses of wine after the theater. If the woman was in a bar, there may be legal liability. No one expects a server to be an expert, but you got to ask, are you driving? But even if there was a designated driver, you should not be serving someone over the limit. A young woman intoxicated on the street at 2 A.M, is not a good thing, behind the wheel, unacceptable. Thankfully an officer was on the scene, (2:05 A.M. quelling another disturbance). If the driver had gotten out of the City, who knows. I enjoy restaurants and bars, but serving alcohol until 2 A.M., just seems like a receipe for disaster. I know some bartenders are watchful, but all need to slow down, before 2 A.M. This woman will get her day in court, but don't think she will be behind the wheel anytime soon. The penalty will extend beyond criminal judgement. She will be paying for her actions with a life-time of high insurance, (and more importantly for a young person), extra scrutiny from employers, in both the private and public sectors. A high price to pay, for a night of dubious pleasure.

Where in the story does it state that the women came out of a bar?. It doesn't! Just because she was in the downtown area doesn't mean she was drinking at a bar. She could have had a bottle in her purse. I guess the circumstances that led up to her drunken hit and run spree will come out at some point. In the meantime, don't assume "Some Bartender didn't do their job" when it hasn't been disclosed weather or not she was even in a bar!

It defies logic to suggest that a person as chemically altered as the driver would be capable of sound judgement. Bartenders are trained in knowing when a person is too drunk. Of course it is possible, though unlikely given the time, that the person was not even at a bar.

What has this world come too where people shouldnt be responsible for themselves. This girl went too a bar and got drunk then tried too drive. Now I'm not a bar person,in all my years I've been too a bar like 5 times in my life. But I didnt think that the waitresses or bartenders should watch how much I drink.I took responsibility and had a friend take me home if I drank to much. But dont worry, she committed this in AA County. She'll get off with a slap on the wrist and maybe a fine.
