Postcards deliver history of Naval AcademyPublished 11/29/09
One old postcard features a 1910 picture of Naval Academy midshipmen wearing dark uniforms with white leggings while blasting away with artillery pieces on the school's parade ground.
This 1906 card, shot by Annapolis photographer Eugene W. Otto, shows some of the pomp and ceremony that took place in Dahlgren Hall, the Naval Academy’s armory, during the funeral of John Paul Jones.Another pictures the three old engineering buildings - Isherwood, Griffin and Melville halls - that were demolished to make room for Alumni Hall. Still others show the construction and expansion of certain buildings, such as the academy's chapel or Bancroft Hall. Picture postcards documented life at the Naval Academy a century ago, and today provide a valuable glimpse of the school's history, an academy-grad-turned-postcard-collector...
