Stakes high for slots vote

Despite nine months, three rounds of public hearings, two resignations, one ethics recusal, thousands of letters and hours of lobbying with hundreds of millions of dollars on the line, tomorrow's vote on whether to approve a casino at the Arundel Mills mall is still up in the air.

Some county councilmen predict the measure will fail.

Others predict there will not be a vote at all.

And County Executive John R. Leopold promises that regardless, he'll keep pushing the County Council to approve zoning to bring the largest slot machine casino in Maryland to Hanover.

and no vote. That's insane. This whole council needs to go. Anyone want to take any bets on what job Ms Vitale is eyeing? Could it be county exec? 60% voted for slots, let's just get this done.

The only solution to issues like this is for concerned citizens to run for office against any council members they feel are ineffective. Democracy only works when elected officials act as a surrogate to the will of the people, not as a conduit for special interests.

"Reilly's replacement, Councilwoman Tricia Johnson, R-Davidsonville, has declined to say what she thinks on the topic."

I suppose that the prospect of running for an office is more important than expressing your opinion so the public knows where you stand...We shouldn't be surprised based on past history on the school board.

I think its time for a new county council.I bet if they were deciding on raises for themselves and state and county workers,they would have voted long ago.
