Kent Island couple unearths artifacts in their historic house

Brian Lees and Gay Carter Lees have an archaeological dig going on in the kitchen area of their mid-18th century home in Stevensville. When they ripped out the kitchen for a renovation, the Leeses found scores of artifacts.

Brian and Gay Carter Lees' Kent Island home has revealed a wealth of artifacts after the couple started a major renovation project.

The Kent Island couple began unearthing artifacts almost as soon as a construction company tore out their old kitchen a month ago. In the dirt under what used to be the floor were parts of old shoes, part of a pipe, bones from a wild boar and other animals, oyster shells, bells, bottles and many pieces of pottery.

For now, the artifacts, most still covered in a thin layer of dirt, are being held in bins.

Many of us have homes on or near early settlements.
My London Towne home sits on the site of the 1700's shipyard. Every year we tilled the garden and the tiller crunched on something we hope for an artifact.
