Annual pep rally gears mids up for Army-Navy game

Fireworks burst over Tecumseh Court in front of Bancroft Hall at the Naval Academy’s pep rally yesterday for this weekend’s Army-Navy game. The traditional bonfire was postponed because of the flooded Farragut Field, but the midshipmen celebrated with fireworks and with the help of the Electric Brigade. The bonfire might be held tonight if Farragut Field dries out enough, and the running of the game ball begins tomorrow.
The Army-Navy week bonfire is a fairly recent - and raucous - tradition.
It usually involves "about 500 wooden pallets, 25 bales of straw and a match," said John Finkle, Naval Academy public works supervisor. A wooden version of Army's mule mascot is burned above the bonfire.
But yesterday's rain washed out the bonfire, so last night a pinata replica of the Army mule was hung from a crane and busted open by excited midshipmen.
Public works officials at the academy said they may try to hold the bonfire tonight if Farragut Field dries out enough after this week's heavy rains.
