Looking inside the county's trash bags

Capital Gazette Communications
Published 12/14/09

The county government needs to know what we are all throwing away in our garbage cans each week.

Pamela Wood — The Capital Chris Mentzer of Annapolis pulls a newspaper from the trash at the Millersville Landfill. The county has hired contractors to sample trash from all over the county to see how much of it should have been recycled.

And there's only one way to find out: Take a look inside that stinky, gross mess.

The county government is sampling trash bags from Linthicum to Lothian, from Maryland City to Mayo, to figure out how much trash is really trash, and how much of it is really recyclable.

County workers aren't actually doing the dirty work themselves. They've contracted with SCS Engineers, a Northern Virginia firm, which in turn hired workers through the Aerotek staffing agency to help.

Sheltered from the wind and cold by a tent...

going through our trash... - 2009-12-18 13:38:42

this is stupid....no money should be spent to fund this stupid program.....i can think of 5 better ways to determine what trash is being thrown out and by whom...... first and foremost is your education......look at the trash in the poorer sections as compared to the richer sections......

Maybe stating the obvious... - 2009-12-17 22:55:32

Jim, maybe this is why someone else was hired to do the study and not you! :)
Mike Rowe would do it!!!

Having someone else dig in the curbside trash is besides the point. The point is that a small chunk of money was put into a study, and a lot of that money was given to the contractors hired. The study will show how we progressed (or not) with the county's 50/50 campaign.

Perhaps. - 2009-12-17 14:31:05

Pat, that's a good idea, but I'm not sure if our curbside trash makes it to the local "convenience centers". I guess that's something to ask the County! I do know that the county has a contract with Waste Management to take care of their recycling offsite.

I feel as if those men and women just sitting around attending to the centers aren't paid or trained enough for tasks like that. On the flip side, there are plenty of OTHER government (local, state, and federal) employees that are sitting around and getting paid :)

Indeed. - 2009-12-15 17:48:34

Most of the money that goes into studies is for hiring manpower. That's mostly $56k for hiring people...Meaning jobs in a terrible economic time.

We obviously do need these kinds of studies as people throw away recyclables. This is also why we have jobs for public outreach...people still don't know what to recycle and what not to recycle. I agree with Jane Smith - The website is fantastic!

What? - 2009-12-15 14:09:42

$56,ooo for a study? People already know what they should be doing as far as recycling. Unless you decide to fine the ones that don't, I don't see a point.

Container - 2009-12-15 13:32:26

I agree that they need to publicize the fact that the large containers are available. Once we received one, my recycling increased, now that I have 2, I probably only have one bag of garbage a week.

We in Cape Anne recycle LOTS! Jane, I agree with you -- let's have a followup story, please, Capital. Fred, agree with you as well, and most in our 'hood use the big bins. Hope the day comes when recycle days are 2/wk and trash only 1/wk.

Not sure about your neighborhood. But mine has already gone to the larger containers. Most of us have more than one.

container - 2009-12-14 12:41:01

One of the things the county can do to promote recycling is to push the fact that LARGE trash-can type recycling containers are available. They are a lot more convenient than the little tubs most people use.

Recycling! - 2009-12-14 12:08:21

I hope this study will help enlighten AA County residents how much they can actually recycle. The web site is fantastic and I urge all residents to visit it - it has clear information on all the things that you can recycle. Thanks to The Capital for printing it - and can you please do a follow up story when the study is finished? Thanks!
