Recession is the top story of eventful, trying 2009

The way Steve Samaras sees it, there are similarities between the economic downturn and the great Main Street fire that destroyed his Annapolis store in 1995.

"If you make it through it, it builds character," said the owner of Zachary's Jewelers, which relocated and reopened just a week after the blaze. "You're stronger and better to go through it."

This isn't to say either the fire or the recession have been a picnic to weather, but he's confident his store will survive and the economy will gradually improve.
