"You ought to understand and know the risk of tanning, just like the way the federal government puts warnings on cigarettes," Leopold said.
On Monday night, Leopold proposed a new ordinance that would force the county's estimated 35 tanning salons and scores of health clubs, spas and beauty salons with tanning booths to post warning signs at both business entrances and beside every tanning bed.
The bill already has frustrated tanning salon owners, who said their industry...

Tanning Bed Advocacy - 2010-01-17 16:03:43
Dear Erin,
I am a former LAF grant reviewer (cancer survivor) and am working in eastern Washington State to encourage health clubs to remove their tanning beds. My blog about these efforts is www.fritzsword.com . I would like to get in touch with Mr. Leopold to discuss how we can be more effective in our efforts even though we have had some minor success. I became aware of the efforts of Howard County from my first Livestrong Quarterly magazine.
Thank you.

cancer - 2010-01-09 01:13:31
guess next we will have signs all over Ocean City on the beach and boardwalk stay out of the sun don't go on the boat or whatever I lived in Shadyside for 30years and even before spent most of my time on the water on the south river and I do not have cancer I don't think it's the tanning bed it's more like it was over used or just other factors like lung cancer in people that never smoked or had jobs where it could be a factor.And when I lived in Shadyside I spent all weekend and evenings on the beach,most people who use tanning beds use them to often since they are in a hurry to get the tan.It's always put the blame somewhere.

I agree with you. I am a melanoma survivor. I spent a lot of time in tanning beds and I was well aware of the dangers. I kept telling myself it was safer because I burn so easily and this gave me a base to prevent burning when out in the sun. After my diagnosis and surgeries, I can only blame myself.

Warning - 2010-01-08 12:19:49
We have had labels on cigarettes for years. People still smoke. Its against the law to drive and text, and people still do.
This is crazy. Do we warn blue collar construction guys sitting on bull dozers that they might catch cancer while working?
Whats even crazier, do they think the signs will actually stop anybody from getting a tan?

Melanoma by the numbers - 2010-01-08 09:38:31
Dear Erin;
Interesting piece on indoor tanning and the Anne Arundel numbers on melanoma. In the US, 90% of those stricken with melanoma incidence and fatality are 45 years of age and older and the median age is 60. Why not take your story a step further and give readers some more factual info on melanoma? Why not provide them average age of those 117 people in your county diagnosed with melanoma and how many of those suffered from overexposure in a professional indoor tanning salon?
Millions of people weigh the risk/benefit of UV exposure and choose indoor tanning where exposure in provided in moderation, by skin type and a timer, and the reduced risk of overexposure and erythema.
