The Queen Anne's Conservation Association has sent a letter to Brian Miller, the inspector general of the U.S. General Services Administration, asking for an investigation of the process that led to the 2,000-acre Hunter Ray and Crismer farm properties being chosen for a proposed Foreign Affairs Security Center.
"The appearance exists that the process has been systematically...

Far More Harm Than Good - 2010-01-15 11:18:46
We now have over 3000 (yea that's right, three thousand) pages of documents related to this proposed hard skills training facility the State Department wants to force us to accept in a peaceful, environmentally sensitive farm community. Over 2500 of those pages come from requests under the Maryland Public Information Act. They clearly show that this whole process was intentionally hidden from area residents.
Those documents also clearly show the incredible harm that would come to the people in the Ruthsburg community. When we showed our county commissioners how deleterious it was, they unanimously withdrew their support for the project.
Despite many repeated requests from the citizens of Queen Anne's County for our congressman, Frank Kratovil, to conduct the business of the people in front of the people, he has yet to communicate with us.
State Department documents claim there will be only a total of 500 jobs at the facility with the majority of those positions being filled with existing transferring employees. We would get a few janitorial and cafeteria jobs in exchange for our own "little Aberdeen". We are a rural community by choice. We are not about to sacrifice the right our friends and neighbors to the peaceful enjoyment of their homes for a few empty promises from the federal government.
We have survived recessions before and we will survive this one as well. We do a pretty good job of looking out for one another. We have gone to the trouble of doing the research and informing ourselves and it was a pretty easy decision for most of us. We have spoken loudly that we have no interest in a plateful of Kratovil's pork. Democracy is alive and well over here in Queen Anne's County.

Professionalism - 2010-01-14 15:21:45
The eastern shore will benefit form this facility, but you can't come into the community unprepared, you can't dismiss the adjacent property owners. There's no excuse for lack of preparation, but if unprepared, an experienced professional would have taken the opportunity to learn the community's concerns. These could have been addressed in subsequent meetings. Senator Mikulski's spokesperson stated 'we expect to see some progress'. You can be sure the next meeting wiil have a different tone.
