Residents balk at mall casino plans

Capital Gazette Communications

Yards from the spot where a controversial casino is scheduled to rise from the parking lot, more than 70 people packed into an Arundel Mills meeting room last night to pick over the proposal.

Residents, often hostile and confrontational, quizzed engineers and developers on traffic, crime, parking and lighting during the most detailed public presentation yet on the 200,000-square-foot entertainment complex that is to house 4,750 slot machines.

Some residents said that, for all the specifics the developers gave on their vision of the casino, they did not have enough answers on fixing the already-failing intersections around the...

I for one don't have a problem with a slots facility being at Arundel Mills Mall. I go to the casinos in Atlantic City, take a set amount, enjoy myself win or loose and I'm done. I think if they are going to build a gaming facility there why not make it a full casino. As for those people that don't want it at Arundle Mills, have you looked at that mall lately? It is not some crystal palace of a place that is spotless and everyone is polite to one another. It is another filthy mall over run with baggy jean kids thinking they are cool. It is full of rude driver's that think it is their God given right to think they come first and to not let someone in a traffic line. I guess they feel being polite is a hastle and they are way too important and busy to be kind to another human being. If I was the owner of this new casino/slot facility I would give it serious consideration. I hope for their sake the profits more than make up for their new building being trashed by the natives that roam this mall.

Only Slots? - 2010-01-18 08:44:09

West VA and PA have already taken the next step to compete with MD. They have voted to add table games to their casinos. Compared to slots, table games require some degree of skill to win on a regular enough basis to ever come out ahead in the long term. This is especially true in poker.
There is a stigma attached to the patrons of slots parlors that does not necessarily carry over into poker. ESPN does not carry any shows about people playing slots. People watch poker because it is something they think they can be successful at, if they had the chance to try it. We need it here.

It's Location, Location, Location!! - 2010-01-18 01:28:58

This discussion is whether a slots casino is appropriate for location at Arundel Mills Mall. The Mall is a "regional" attraction, which is profitable and accepted by the community, although it has its problems. Slot revenues are to "revive and support" the horse racing industry in MD. Laurel is the home of one of those racetracks. If Laurel fails, hundreds of jobs could be lost. Since Arundel Mills is successful the "new" jobs will just complement an already successful enterprise. If new jobs come to Laurel, the benefits double: the existing jobs are saved and new jobs created.
In AA county, the issue is the appropriate placement of the slots casino. Arundel Mills Mall is not the right place!! That is the issue! By responses to the petition drive, I would say there are a lot of AA citizens who agree. Too bad the County Council and Leopold didn't see the obvious. Cordish may get his way. The developers usually do in this county even though Leopold promised us better.

STATS - 2010-01-17 22:12:36

According to stats from DLL to Gov. O'Malley; first, much of the revenue that supports the infrastructure from slots in W.Va, and DE comes from Marylander's. Dover slots accrue $150 million annually from Marylander's, in other words 30% of all Delaware revenue came from Marylander's. Second, the social consequences did not exist, slots in contiquous states did not encourage crime or addiction to gambling quiet the contrary, crime statistics show that the crime rate went down. Do the research it's there for you. Bottom line, Delaware slot's provide 1.5 billion in revenue and 30% of that comes from Maryland residents, let's get with it, bring that money back home, no matter how you look at it people are going to gamble so why not here. This could also generate many more jobs, and is law enforcement are concerned this would only bring more officers on the force, it would not be it the best interest of the casino to have a high crime rate.

B) the people have spoken, they want slots

C) crime is not a problem

Ballot - 2010-01-15 11:50:23

This was on the ballot during the last election. The summary discussed locations including around the Baltimore City stadiums and Arundel Mills (w/in 2 miles of MD295). In addition, the politicians sold this as raising funds for education. Scam. I voted against it. About 60% MDers voted for this.

Folks should inform themselves more before voting for a measure.

You can't blame slots for the police not wanting to patrol there now. And with slots in the area I am sure the county will up police presence to keep the area secure. Sounds to me like the mall is the problem, not slots coming to town. Maybe Stop slots time might be better spent trying to clean up the mess that is already there.

I think Arundel Mills is the greatest spot for this type of thing. I mean there is already enough infrastructure to handle the Xmas shopping Onslaught, the area is not exactly oozing natural beauty, and everything there is already OVER THE TOP big ( muvico ) .

I am grateful that it will not effect my great lifestyle and neighborhood, and though I admire a good fight, the people fighting this one need to realize it is way too late to close the barn door. Next time vote as if what you were voted on actually might affect you !!!!

Economic reasons to fight a casino - 2010-01-14 18:07:03

HERE ARE JUST A FEW PROVEN FACTS AS TO WHY CASINOS JUST DONT MAKE GOOD ECONOMIC SENSE. By: Dan Bosley, State Legislator

"Why I have opposed casinos in the Commonwealth"

I have opposed opening casinos in Massachusetts, not on moral grounds (anyone who has the successful lottery that we do has no moral out on this issue), but on the question of whether or not it makes good economic policy. After studying this for eleven years, I am absolutely certain that it makes no sense at all and in fact, hurts our economy in quite a few ways.
First, the question of "everyone is doing it, so why can't we recapture the money we lose to other states?" is a red herring. That was the reason given in Rhode Island when Rhode Island voted to place slots in Lincoln Park. Yet a University of Rhode Island study indicated that only a small percentage of gamblers came home to Rhode Island. Most of the money came from people who were already in the state, thereby merely shifting money already spent in the economy. Oh, and by the way, the slots have not saved the dog racing industry, but have made the owners much richer.

Second, our Lottery returned $952 million to cities and towns last year. The two best casinos in the US, in Connecticut returned about $400 million to Connecticut. How much more do people expect us to do? This is important for a couple of reasons. First, the lottery is extremely important to cities and towns and we should stick with the Lottery and not go on to casinos where commercial operators and native tribes will get a lion?s share of our net gaming revenues. And second, we get about $.24 of every dollar wagered in the lottery that goes back to cities and towns. Slot machines pay off at an average of 93%. That means that that they pay off at $.07 for every dollar wagered. If we were to tax at 50% (remember, Connecticut gets 25% of the net gaming revenues), that means that we would get 3.5 cents of every dollar in revenues. So for every dollar that the lottery l

By visiting here, http://bit.ly/6sl6Ps

you can see how a grassroots effort of concerned citizens formed, organized and SUCCESSFULLY fought off a proposed casino from being built. There is a wealth of information from this group, all you have to do is read up and take action! IT CAN BE DONE.

Do not allow a developer with only one priority, (their ROI, (return on investment) con you into thinking that this will help you or your community. Believe no promises and question without hesitation the entire proposal. I will make regular postings and may provide contact information if requested.

Question - 2010-01-14 14:51:08

"Weinberg also assured residents that the company would help them work with the county to fix the current traffic and crime problems using money the casino will generate for the local government.

'Now there will be the financial resources to solve some of the problems that are here today, before the introduction of a gaming facility,' Weinberg said."

Yes, but how much worse will it get-and for how long-before anyone has the wherewithal to remedy the already-existing problems? Sounds like throwing kindling on a raging wildfire and promising that doing so will eventually tip the scales to release the water to douse it. Unconscionable leap of faith involved there.

It's hard to understand how people who live near a giant outlet mall are afraid of traffic issues.
