Ali, a 1-year-old brown and white brindle mix with an emaciated frame and scratched, swollen face, sat quietly on a pink comforter folded on the floor.
Two cages down, Foreman, a 1-year-old brown brindle with less noticeable injuries, paced back and forth in his pen.
"We think he might have been losing," Lt. Glenn Shanahan of Animal Control said while pointing at Ali.
"This one will tear you...

My Take on This - 2010-01-24 16:20:03
A couple of years ago a friend of mine was cutting through the woods in Truxtun Park to get to his restaurant job as he did everyday and one day he walked in the middle of 50 men who built a homemade dog pen and were taking bets on dog fighting. This happened like almost 20 years ago.
I've even heard stories from friends of mine on the city police force about cock (chicken) fighting for money in Admiral Farragut apartments years ago.
My point is I think this type of activity goes on all the time and the sick, mindless, heartless, individuals who partake in this activity in the words of a Christian and Human Being (myself) will "get theirs".

If you are like me and believe these animals CAN be rehabilitated, there is an organization called Best Friends Animal Society (they have a show on National Geographic, too called Dog Town) who takes in dogs as a last resort. I already sent them an email pleading for them to consider taking these animals, but maybe if several of us do it, it may be more likely to happen. 'nmhp@bestfriends.org'

Sadness - 2010-01-22 09:33:30
You know what really breaks my heart? While I am a respecter of animals and see them as a gift, I cant seem to get over how so many people have such vitriol and vengeful reactions to someone who performs malicious acts on animals yet have no problem doing the same to their own offspring. Let me remind that while this act is awful, there are reports that over 50 million babies have been killed in the womb since 1973. Where is the outrage???

"by the majority of posts, I would say that most agree that these men are subhuman."
By whose standards? What measuring rod are we using to determine such? KC - yours? What are those standards? Are they codified or are you making up codes like so many "humnans", as they go along life's journey.
Don't get me wrong, I DO NOT agree with what these men have done.
But, you calling out these men as subhuman, are not therefore judging? Didn't we have this conversation some time ago?

this says it all - 2010-01-21 10:24:51
Violent acts toward animals have long been recognized as indicators of a dangerous psychopathy that does not confine itself to animals. Anyone who has accustomed himself to regard the life of any living creature as worthless is in danger of arriving also at the idea of worthless human lives, wrote humanitarian Dr. Albert Schweitzer. Murderers very often start out by killing and torturing animals as kids, according to Robert K. Ressler, who developed profiles of serial killers for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Studies have now convinced sociologists, lawmakers, and the courts that acts of cruelty toward animals deserve our attention. They can be the first sign of a violent pathology that includes human victims.
Animal abuse is not just the result of a minor personality flaw in the abuser but rather a symptom of a deep mental disturbance. Research in psychology and criminology shows that people who commit acts of cruelty toward animals dont stop there; many of them move on to their fellow humans.
The FBI has found that a history of cruelty to animals is one of the traits that regularly appear in its computer records of serial rapists and murderers, and the standard diagnostic and treatment manual for psychiatric and emotional disorders lists cruelty to animals as a diagnostic criterion for conduct disorders.
A study conducted by Northeastern University and the Massachusetts SPCA found that people who abuse animals are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against humans. The majority of inmates scheduled to be executed for murder at Californias San Quentin penitentiary practiced their crimes on animals, according to the warden.

Sands roads dirty secrets - 2010-01-21 10:15:42
I can't believe they let any of them out! This cruelty is not surprising to me. The police and social workers should look very closely at how these monsters are treating the children on Sands Road as well... I am sure that they, too, are at very great risk for all types of abuse as well! If they can't prosecute sufficiently for this animal abuse... look into the family situations... you should find grounds for prosecution that will stick. Animal abusers don't stop at animals!

Imagine one of your family members committing a stupid crime and having to pay for their crime in a dog pit, or in the Pax River fighting the tide, or being fed to dogs.
If you're not willing to allow your family member to experience that type of sentence, keep your un-civilized comments to yourself! You're allowing us to see that you're a low-life...which is different from these guys how?!!

Thank you Anonymous Caller - 2010-01-20 22:17:29
This person did a great service to the neighborhood! With anonymity, the police can investigate a situation without endangering fellow citizens. These guys are dangerous to animals and to others. I can't stomach child molesters, wife beaters or animal cruelty. I hope Peta does its job, I will let my opinion be known. The dogs need a chance though. An expert should be consulted before putting them down.

So much is always said about too much prejudice in AA County, so they should be tried in Alabama.

Outrage - 2010-01-20 19:10:18
Public outrage will undoubtedly help these criminals get longer sentences. The more people that complain, the more obligated prosecutors and judges will be to hand out stiff sentences. Someone organize a movement to protest these crimes, and they will be used as a warning to the other criminals involved in dog fighting around the county and state.
In 2007 a man was convicted of dog fighting in Alabama after authorities uncovered 17 injured and scarred dogs on his property. His sentence.....102 YEARS !! Think there is any dog fighting going on down there anymore, not much I would say.
So, let these guys get off cheap, and nothing will change. PETA now is your chance to actually do something constructive.

I agree, let the dogs have at them, they are nothing but scum. And although it may take a lot of time and work, most dogs can be retrained to be loving pets again, but I would in no way allow them around any children or other pets because they can revert back without warning.

Disagree - 2010-01-20 12:06:33
Most dogs that are trained to fight, are not able to train back to what should be their normal behavior. Even dogs you think are fine, can revert to their previously behavior. That is why they said its not worth the risk.
I do agree that their trainers need to be dealt with!

Lothian Dog fights - 2010-01-20 11:34:57
First off, they have them all the time in the Lothian area. Secondly, these dogs certainly can be rehabed. They need to be taken care of, learn to trust humans again and be worked with extensivly. It's the fighters and "trainers" of these dogs who need to be euthanized.
