If granted, such a waiver would bring the number of days county students go to school this year from a planned 181 down to 176, and leave just one snow day to make up either at the end of the school year or over spring break.
"The superintendent said instructional time is very important, but this is an unprecedented situation where some relief is warranted," said county schools spokesman Bob Mosier.
The state Board of Education decided...

Mary Ann, I am sorry if my bureaucratic nomenclature confused you ( I not burea-savvy).
Perhaps you can explain the school-closing decision process to us all, and direct those with concerns to the responsible party ?

I mentioned prevously in these posts that AA County government has nothing to do with snow removal for AACPS. AACPS pays for and manages their own snow removal.

If one has a direct question concerning how a county agency makes a school closing decision call them and ask. Though you may experience numerous dead-end call transfers ( especially with DPW) by incompetent county employees I have always been able to sooner our later connect with someone who is very competent.
I agree, my wealth and expertise has aided me greatly in my mission toward accountability, but I assure you anyone can do it.
Don't like the answer you get ? Well then, that is another matter, but at least you have some good information from which to continue your mission.

Closings - 2010-02-27 09:26:40
Fay, I agree that the closings following the blizzard were obviously called for. But the closings the following week? Not to mention the ridiculous call on late openings.

The blizzards warrented some closings, no doubt, but there have been other days called that were borderline ridiculous. That aside, standards are set for the number of days MD students are to attend school, and I think they should be adhered to. I hear so much about the need to invest in the education of our children, either the kids need 181 or 176 days to complete their annual curriculum. If the 5 days are not that relevant, can we cut 10,20,30 days out of the program and save the taxpayer wasted millions??

I don't think two storms rated as blizzards are "frivolous snow events".

School Closings - 2010-02-26 13:17:03
If Kevin Maxwell would place a greater focus on opening the schools during frivilous snow events, he would not have to go back to the state for credits. I say deny the credits.
