Although transportation officials have said no plans are finalized, the financial burdens on the MdTA will grow as the agency continues to pay for the Intercounty Connector linking Montgomery and Prince George's counties and other projects.
"We have deferred increases in tolls and taken on very large transportation projects," Ronald Freeland, the executive secretary of the...

Need equitable way to pay for infra - 2010-03-09 00:23:04
the news today about a possible higher toll on the Bay Bridge to pay for infrastructure costs, particularly the Intercounty Connector is not an equitable solution. If the bill needs to be paid, find a way to do this equitably, and not put a burden on one group of people, particularly a group not likely to use the ICC. A lot of people, not just vacationers, use the bridge to work or visit/care for relatives.

"...So the commuters who cross the bridge every day, will pay for the ICC..."
Interesting point Mike - I wonder where the money came from to build the two bridges back in the 1950's and 1970's. How many people got to share in the cost of development of the Eastern Shore through these massive public projects without ever getting across the bridges themselves? ...but of course that was way before our time, so it doesn't really matter - right?

$5 Toll vs. Commuters - 2010-03-08 09:03:04
"...but then they screwed the commuter, it used to be 20 trips, now it's like 20 trips used in 25-30 days and alot of these people now only work 3-4 day w/ longer hours..."
If it is not economical for someone to use the commuter pricing system for their transits, then by definition they are not commuters. Now, that being said, I am sure the system can be flexible enought to take into account the concept of Flex Time in their calculations for future dconsideration.

I want to buy a new pool and I want you to pay for it. So the commuters who cross the bridge every day, will pay for the ICC. What if you would have to pay $25-40 in tolls per week just to get to work. I dont think so. I cross every day. The beaurocracy at MDTA is bloated. We are paying for huge benefits and way too many perks for these MDTA exec's.

Pay less for commute trips - 2010-03-07 10:46:51
I think the only way to be less dependent and affected by toll fares and gas prices hike is to change our commuting travelling habits. Either to use commuter transit systems if available or to form a carpool. I tried the driving cost calculator of the carpooling network ( http://bit.ly/dyb2qh ) and they suggest huge savings for carpoolers: up to 2000$ and 1,5 tons of GHG per year.

$5 is reasonable - 2010-03-06 18:02:03
A toll of $5 per car (more for more axels of course)for a transit in both direction is very reasonable in my opinion (obviously I do not live on the Eastern Shore). However, understanding that some do transit everyday, I think it would be a good idea to sell to steady communters at a slightly lower rate from Monday - Friday 5-9am and 4-7pm.

Annual Mileage Tax? - 2010-03-04 19:49:26
Next thing you will want is GPS tracked cars taxed by the mile and road used. Wrong direction buddy.
That bridge was built amongst other reasons, for the "People of Maryland" to have equal access to both sides of the Bay. Not sure what your definition of "People of Maryland" is, but mine includes everyone.
Face it, the party is over, you are going to read more and more stories like this. We better start learning to live on less, because our government work force is bloated, and instead of trimming jobs and becoming more efficient, we look for ways to continue propagating the machine. Sooner or later the crap is going to hit the fan, lots more people are going to lose jobs. Wait, you think it's bad now, keep an eye on California, thats a good clue as to whats coming.

Bay Bridge Tolls.. - 2010-03-04 13:00:05
are way too low. The cost of that type of structure should warrant an $8.00 round trip charge. Why should MDTA (people of Maryland) subsidize East Bay homeowners with a discount to earn on the west bay side? Also, the gas tax is a poor device for generating revenue for transportation projects. Gas mileage doubles/triples (as may be found with plug-in cars) over the next 10 years, tax revenue gets cut in half. We need to have an annual mileage tax.

I know the routes you are talking about. So does everybody else. The amount of traffic going back and forth is amazing. If you travel the weekend, you can still do it, in about 30 minutes. However, during a normal workday, make that 1 hour, 1 1/2 hours, and 2, if the beltway or 270 is shut down due to serious accidents, then forget it. I heard friends talked about 3-4 hours to make the trip during the snow storms.

The intercounty connector (ICC) will be a toll road when it opens. In fact, the toll rate per mile is quite high compared to most other toll roads.
A modest increase in the gas tax would be a more equitable way of addressing the costs.

So the people who live on the Eastern Shore who commute over the bride bear the brunt of paying for the road used by the people of Mont Co?? How's that equitable? This state is being run like a 3rd world country. The bridge tolls were supposed to be exclusively for the maintenance of the bridge, now its to facilitate a road the state can't seem to afford. The gas tax is a fairer solution but that almost ensures that Annapolis will not choose that path.

Gas Tax - 2010-03-03 20:07:23
While I'd like to think just taxing the users of the new projects would solve the problem, in reality I don't believe it'll erase the massive debt MdTA has created. Plus building new toll booths or E-ZPass lanes would just add to that debt. As the article mentions the state gas tax hasn't increased since 1992 yet our state road network has obviously expanded. We should be able to swallow a two cent increase as a collective state, rather than only taxing a group using the Bay Bridge.
Personally I'd like to see train and light rail projects to ease road maintenance and traffic congestion, but I haven't heard any such news to date.

I hate to disagree. If I am going to OC and spend the week and drop 3-4K, chances are the extra $1.50 or $2.50 is not going to be felt. Seriously, if you are going to the outlets adn drop 2-3 hundred, the same thing. I do feel that the daily commuter will bear the brunt of this.

Just one more reason to stay east of the bridge and then watch more east of the bridge business suffer because of the toll.
