Children ran in packs yesterday to sign a banner at West Annapolis Elementary School, pledging their best effort today on the state's standardized tests and wishing each other good luck.

This morning, they entered the building dancing to the "Rocky" theme song. "We're using a lot of positive encouragement," said Barbara Stone, a third-grade teacher at West Annapolis. "They've worked hard all year. They're ready. We're just trying to get them in the right frame of mind." Months of preparation followed by weeks of stress in the county's public schools culminated...
