Edward Papenfuse, the state archivist and commissioner of land patents, went over the project Friday in a meeting with the county House delegation.
Papenfuse said the archives are in need of additional space and educational outreach opportunities, as about half the collection has been placed in commercial storage.
"It would take one fire, it would take one tornado, to destroy some incredible archival material," he said.
