Capital Gazette Communications
Published 03/17/10

Legislation to toughen laws on sex offenders is taking shape in the General Assembly, but the debate over whether the proposed changes go far enough is not over.

The House of Delegates was scheduled to resume debate today on a slate of bills introduced following the death of 11-year old Sarah Foxwell, a Salisbury girl who police say was abducted and murdered last year by a registered sex offender.

The bills would increase the number of those who have to register as sex offenders and the information they have to disclose, including places of employment. They would require lifetime supervision of serious and repeat sex offenders...

Marty you must not have any children to make a statement like that. Statistically, sex offenders will reoffend. Law Enforcement need to know where they are at all times. When a child goes missing, they are first to call on, and most of the time, they are the abductors, rapist, killer, what have you. The sex offender registry is a good tool when moving into a neighborhood, picking a school etc. People need to know these things, at least as a mother, I do. Just like the amber alert people want to change that too. The Amber Alert has saved so many children. It is scary for a child to see, but if you educate your children it wouldn't be so scary for them. Knowledge is power and today, these kids need all the knowledge they can get. Its a scary place for a little guy out there.

Fair? - 2010-03-17 13:36:47

The sex offender registry seems to go against the basic principles of American justice. If you serve your time, your actual time not an early release, then you should be free to go. You shouldn't have a continuing punishment from the court.

If these people pose such a grave threat (and let's not kid ourselves, you know the odds are that way) then we shouldn't be letting them out.

There is also an issue with the breadth of those that have to register. A person who abducts and rapes a child goes through the same registration as 18 year old who has sex with their 17 year old boyfriend (in other jurisdictions- I am trying to keep this simple and not get into the complex MD law here). But the point is that really horrible crimes are grouped with wrong, but not too wrong crimes.

Its So Simple - 2010-03-17 13:06:16

If you lock em up and don't release them, they don't wind up repeating their crimes and hurting addition victims.
