Man gets life in prison for slayings

A 57-year-old retired Navy man and church elder with no criminal record was sentenced yesterday to life in prison for the deaths last summer of his ex-girlfriend and her new lover.

Family members of Elbert Gardner gasped in Circuit Court in Annapolis when they heard the lengthy sentence, but his defense attorney later praised Judge Ronald A. Silkworth for exercising some leniency and not ordering him to serve two consecutive life sentences.

"He's given him a chance," said Assistant Public Defender Katy O'Donnell, noting her client could be paroled before he dies.

wow you make this man out to be some angel and he killed my sister and her boyfriend .you seem to have said all the good that he did if he wanted to be a fool and still live in a house and pay bill and buy her things and knew they were not together then he is the fool . i dont care how many jobs someone works and what they do it does not give you the right to kill anyone and if he was fed up then he should have left and for this paper to but all they did that my sister was naked when found you have no respect for the dead for my sister or her boyfriend i didnt like what this paper had to say when it happen and dont like what you had to say this time so instead of making my sister out to be the bad one in all this how about you go see what she was doing last i check she also had a job was in college and serving her country so the hell with him working 3 jobs he is the fool who stayed .
