Among the contents were a two-page special series on public housing from The Evening Capital of July 26, 1949, a program from Obery Court's Dec. 13, 1951, dedication, and some coins and faded photographs.

"It could have been lost to history," Carl O. Snowden, chairman of the city Housing Authority Board of Commissioners, said of the unexpected find.

"It (the newspaper) tells me a lot about the people who put that time...

nice story, then... - 2010-04-14 17:26:49

The idea of finding a little glimpse of history in a time capsule is really neat. Good story... then I read about someone who has lived in public housing for 59 years... and that made me want to puke. Then I read this little gem...

""This is beautiful!" said Booth, 51, a former operating room technician. "This is what I love the most," she said pointing to the large, stainless steel, side-by-side refrigerator-freezer.""

Stainless steel? that makes me want to cry. I have to go write my tax check now. ugh.

END PUBLIC HOUSING. FREE TENTS FOR THE WIN!

6 Decades?? - 2010-04-14 16:52:38

"...has lived in the adjoining College Creek Terrace for 59 years..." How is that possible? She lived there since she was 25 years old - that's unfathonable.

Since "federal law prohibits putting caps on how long residents may reside in public housing" perhaps its time the law be changed to say as long as you live in public housing or pay no appreciable taxes, you should not be allowed to vote people into office who allow for such laws. At the very least public housing should require public service of some sort. I have to work 10+hrs/day 5 days a week I don't think it's too much to ask that the residents of public housing do something with their day.

Good - 2010-04-14 16:21:29

"Part of the process in coming in (to public housing) should be, what is your plan to get out?" he said. "We want to be more than warehousing people in public housing."

Good for Snowden, I hope he sticks to his word. We need to empower people not enable them.
