Edward Daniel Knudsen Jr., 15, of 29 Second St. in Waysons Mobile Court, was walking with three friends along the eastern bank of the Patuxent River Trail, behind the mobile home park, at just before 4 p.m. when his friends dared him to swim about 100 feet to the western bank, police said.

According to the teen's friends, Edward got about...

Sad day - 2010-04-22 11:30:53
Condolences to all his friends and family. It's not just the current or the debris but at this time of year it's also the temperature. Water here is cold, still less than 60 degrees. Hypothermia freaks people out. I'm not sure how much of a chance he had to get to the other side. This is very sad.

I live in this community and have thought since I moved in here that there should be a locked gate over at that area. I feel if you have property over there then you should have a key to the gate and those are the only people allowed in that area. There are a handful of children who walk these streets everyday unsupervised. Yes, they were 15 and at that age I was doing my own thing too. But for the younger children who walk around here, who is to say your child won't end up over by that river? Do you know where your children are at all times?

I lived near the Pax in P.G. for many years. The FIRST thing one learned was DO NOT GO IN.
It isn't just the current, it's the debris and other 'Snags' that can kill you when you get tangled up in them.

It is amazing that more children had not died in the river, many - even elementary school age are unsupervised in the trailer park until parents come home from work. This is an extremely expensive lesson.

and sometimes way too short. This is a parent's worse nightmare to have to bury a child. My prayers go out to the family as they deal with this terrible tragedy.

Sad, sad day - 2010-04-21 16:51:47
Death trap or not, my heart goes out to and prayers will said for the rescuers who searched - particularly those who found the boy, and to the Maryland State Police and Howard County Police aviation divisions who helped in the search for the boy, but most emphatically to the family and friends of the boy who lost a son and all the hopes he presented, a friend and his companionship, perhaps a girlfriend. The fact that the river is a "death trap" in no way decreases the pain and suffering this horrible event has caused to many people.
