Mids fight real war games

Cyber warfare is not the way of the future, it is the war of right now, according to a team of Naval Academy midshipmen immersed in a weeklong cyber competition with the nation's other service academies.

Naval Academy Midshipman 1st Class Christopher Wheeler, a co-captain on the Naval Academy Cybersecurity Team, watches as Midshipman 2nd Class Michael Harrison monitors the system Wednesday during a National Security Agency-sponsored competition among service academies. Wheeler, a senior, said that being an officer means learning to delegate, and Harrison, a junior who served in the Marine Corps for nearly three years before coming to the academy, is being mentioned as a likely co-captain of next year’s team.

In this intense battle, keeping an even keel can be a major victory.

"The hardest part is figuring out what is real and what is not," Midshipman 1st Class Christopher Wheeler, a Naval Academy team co-captain, said Wednesday. "We definitely have had one documented attack."
