State officials want to change the conditions of their parking space lease at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, cutting the number of spaces.
Sam Cook, director of state facilities operations and maintenance at the Annapolis complex, said the state is in the "discussion stage" with the Naval Academy Athletic Association on potential changes in parking arrangements.
The state currently leases 1,000 spaces for $545,700 annually, Cook said, and is examining whether it would be possible to lower the number of...

Great Deal - 2010-04-30 00:25:06
The going rate for parking garages downtown is about $135 a month. Sounds like the state has a good deal and so do state employees. Most employers make the employee pay for parking.

"This may be a charitable non-profit, but the Academy does not appear to hurting for dollars; new indoor stadium on the Severn, new kitchen facilities, tossing tennis patrons and new wrought iron fencing."
Harry, you appear to be mixing apples and oranges here...NAAA is not the Naval Academy. NAAA provides non-appropriated funds via ticket sales and fund raising to support the Naval Academy's Athletic Programs - which are not paid for via the Federal Government.
"Who pays for the police during events at the stadium?"
The same people and businesses who benefit financially from having all the people come to Annapolis for the day or weekend to watch events at the stadium.

$45 a month certainly seems like a good deal for the State. If 1000 the spaces are not being used by State employees, get an accurate accounting and cut back. This may be a charitable non-profit, but the Academy does not appear to hurting for dollars; new indoor stadium on the Severn, new kitchen facilities, tossing tennis patrons and new wrought iron fencing. Who pays for the police during events at the stadium?

Only $45 Buck a month...? - 2010-04-27 14:50:28
I need to send a letter to Chet to find out why he is letting people use his facilities for about half of "market price". I think he needs to raise rates to help pay for more Varsity Sports at Navy.

Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium is owned by the Naval Academy Athletic Association which is a nonprofit organization that supports Naval Academy athletics. As such the stadium isn't a federal facility.

545,700 for 1,000 annually equals 545.7 per slot /12 = 45.48 a month. Why is this such a bad deal?

Has anyone figured out the cost of these spaces per day? $545,000 a year for 1,000 spaces! Are you kidding me? No wonder we are taxed in to oblivion!

"Maximize their dollars" - 2010-04-27 07:32:27
It doesnt strike me as funny that the financial irresponsiblity of times past is now creating financial chaos across the board at all levels of government. The fat cats are shedding alot of weight as the source of revenue shrinks, and their budgets swell. It is disgusting that our elected officials never envision the so called rainy days, and just power full steam ahead when revenue is rolling in like a cash cow. How surprising that Mr Cook remarks "We are always looking at ways we can be more efficient. We are always looking at ways that we can save money." My question is, When did you start looking at this?

Tax Dollars - 2010-04-26 14:02:07
I am confused. My local taxes pay to run the shuttle to take the state employees, paid by my state taxes, from parking paid for by my federal taxes. Sounds to me like you could save money by having them all park in garages and parking spaces like the rest of us.
