Bay 'dead zone' could be smaller

The Chesapeake Bay's infamous "dead zone" - a vast stretch of water that contains virtually no dissolved oxygen, making it inhospitable to marine life - could be smaller this summer than in recent years, scientists said today.

Compared to those in the last 25 years, this summer's dead zone could be the fifth-smallest, if the forecast is accurate. It could be similar to the dead zone seen in 1988, which stretched down the middle of the bay from the Bay Bridge to the mouth of the Patuxent River.

I probably should have heaped on a few more layers of sarcasm before posting. With the amount of rainfall we've had this year I'm not particularly optimistic about WQ in the Bay this summer.
