'Dogs need blood just like people need blood'

Capital Gazette Communications
Published 07/12/10

It was Jinnie's first time as a blood donor, and she refused to let her older brother Bartlett show her up.

Shannon Lee Zirkle — The Capital Kim Rassa, left, feeds her mixed pit bull, Bartlett, peanut butter while Eastern Veterinary Blood Clinic technician Dave Anderson and Dr. Ann Schneider take a blood sample from Bartlett’s neck area. Fellow pit bulls Jinnie and Lily roam the room as they await their turn.

Owner Kim Rassa brought the pit bull mixes into the Eastern Veterinary Blood Bank to give a sample that could help other pets in a medical crisis. Rassa had been bringing Bartlett for three years, so he was used to the treats and belly rubs, as was her other dog, Lily.

This was all new for Jinnie, who Rassa recently adopted. But she managed to get through it and fill up the vial necessary for first timers. Peanut butter was her reward.

"I saw a flier at the vet's office and I thought it might be a good...

Oh, and Dave... - 2010-07-17 21:21:25

As heartwarming as a story as that is, it is anecdotal. I knew a dog once who was caught up in a whole credit card fraud thing and ruined a lot of people's lives. So...there's that.

Not that I lose sleep over what people think, but just so that newcomers to the board know, my post was facetious to prove a point from another board. And being that you are all so innocently passionate about your love for dogs, I don't want you all getting worked up. But then Jim Pearson piped up and, well, I can never resist winding him up. So, that said, I love dogs, they're great, they're better than cats, they smell when it rains, they are an integral part of human society. So...there you go.

Sal, you have not lived until you have enjoyed the companionship and undying love that a dog provides it's human ! I'm not amused by your comment, nor by your lack of compassion displayed here for the subject at hand. Grow up !

That could not have been said better. There are many dogs out there just like Jake. Without them, some humans would not be alive today.

FYI - 2010-07-16 08:48:05

I won't acknowledge Mr Bagatelli's 'stand up' routine with the attention he obviously craves, but I offer this excerpt for all to consider before trying to be witty at the expense of less sentient creatures:

Jake (1995 July 25, 2007) was a well known American black labrador who served as a search and rescue dog following the September 11 attacks and Hurricane Katrina.
Jake was a member of Utah Task Force 1, a federal search and rescue team. These dogs, respond within 24 hours to disasters.
Jake was most noted for his work following the September 11 attacks, where he helped search for human remains at Ground Zero. Jake, like other rescue workers and dogs, was honored by New Yorkers as a hero. Jake served as a rescue dog at the World Trade Center site for 17 days. Like the humans and other rescue dogs he worked with, Jake was exposed to the physical hazards of Ground Zero, including sharp debris and suspected unhealthy air.
Jake also served team following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Jake, along with his Utah Task Force, traveled over 30 hours to Mississippi to help search for survivors. Jake was also deployed to the Gulf Coast in the aftermath of Hurricane Rita.
In his later years, Jake helped to train younger prospective rescue dogs. Jake also worked as a therapy dog at Utah nursing homes and at a camp for burn victims.
Jake had been diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma, a blood borne cancer. He was euthanized on Wednesday, July 25, 2007. His owner reportedly took him for one last walk through the fields and creeks of Oakley, Utah, before his death. Jake was 12 years old when he died.
It is unknown whether Jake's cancer can be linked to his rescue work at Ground Zero. The results of Jake's necropsy will be used as part of a medical study.

Find one thing "funny" or ignoble about this animal's life! In fact, measure your own contributions to society against Jake's and you'll probably fall a bit short.
Enough said.

"Treats of peanut butter" were not included in the healthcare overhaul bill. Dogs will have it better.

Dogs are not "lowly" sir... in fact I usually enjoy their company more than most humans. However, I do see your point. :)

Obamacare - 2010-07-12 20:20:38

If you think this is bad, wait until Obamacare kicks in. We're not going to get the basic care that these dogs get. Under Bush, we got better care than lowly dogs.
